M38A1 paint...clear coat??

Post by Gabriel » Fri Nov 15, 2019 3:03 pm

Hello everyone,

I painted my M38A1 about couple months ago and I thought I had the right paint for it. So, I wrongly put flat OD green on it.

After total restoration, I didnt want to repaint everything including frame, axles, etc. because I know I haven't put the right paint on it. It would be sad to remake all marking I made.

Surely, in a couple years I will repaint it in semi gloss.

So here's my question... Do you know if the shades of OD green will be a little bit darker if I put a clear coat on the entire body?

I'm confused, I would love that my jeep looks more like the US original (if clear coat can help) but if it doesnt work, I dont want to scrap my curent paint that is only 5 months old😬😬$$$$$$

Thanks all,
Gabriel

Clear coat will not be the answer, leave it as it is, there will be a point in time where you tire of it and will repaint it. 24087 is most common US Army repaint, 2430 is Factory original.

I'd say it looks pretty similar to the first pic of the side of the A1 down the page on Kaiser jeep blog :https://blog.kaiserwillys.com/military-jeep-markings

Depends on the year of your jeep; pre 56 it would have been 2430 (now 34070), and post 56 and rebuilds are 24087.

Your M-38A1 is beautiful. The US Army could not make it look any better.

Not every repaint done in US ARMY shops was done in 24087, The M-Day Motorpool at Ft Dix back in 1960 had fresh repaints that appeared to be Shade 319. I still have a couple gallons of original 319 Enamel. I used some on my Ben Hur.

Thank you :)

I was just disappointed by the shade it took. I'm 20 and just beggining in military vehicule restoration so I will take it as an experience!

I'm still pretty proud of the jeep itself and paint job look incredible even if it isnt the shade I wanted!
