M170 Spare Tire Mount

Post by ndnile » Sat May 25, 2019 10:50 am

Normally the M170 mounts the spare in the recessed area next to the front pax. Mine has a double width pax seat that would be in the way. Instead of sourcing a single width pax seat and the unique M170 tire mount I’m thinking about mounting it on the rear fold down tail gate (same as CJ5). Is there a suitable mount for this location?

There is; it's an M38 or M38A1 Spare Tire Mount. This was actually one of the mods for converting the M170 into an MRC 87 Radio jeep. The tailgate is bolted closed for this mod as there is also a substantial antenna bracket added. I'm not sure if the tailgate is usable with the spare mounted.

Thanks for the insights David. Given the new stresses on the tail gate to support a tire I guess it makes sense that the chain hooks should be replaced with bolts. I just hate to loose the utility of a swing down tail gate, but everything is a compromise. Only other option I see is to put a side mount CJ2a style side mount, but that doesn't appeal to me much at all. Thanks again.

I believe the chains and hooks reamin in place, just a bolt and nut run through the same latch hole as the M38 has in place. You could do tire mount and jerry can mount on the gate. They will not lower with the items in place as they will hit the top lip of the bumperettes. If you have the spare tire mount bolted in the tub on the M170, I would be interested in it. Along with the round spare tire plate Jerry cans was stored on floor in front of spare tire with footman loops and strap, so you can remove those as well if they were in place. You might find someone with an A1 tail gate that you could swap out and you would hve the mounts and reinforcements needed.
