Cross shaft Attaching Bracket

Post by LouVita » Sun Jun 03, 2018 7:42 pm

Bought a 1953 M38A1 that uses a 'cross shaft attaching bracket' in place of the clutch control lever assembly found on the MB. Is this bracket a field fix or was it part of the A1 change?

Any information would be appreciated.

MB, M-38, M-38A1 all have a cross shaft, it attaches to the Frame with an A-180 Bracket that is "U" shaped and a A-180 Ball on either end of the shaft. The A-180 ball will wear lopsided. The Bracket and ball is also available as a an assembly with Part number A-179. Discuss it with Ron.
There are two A-176 Felt Pads, A-177 Control tube spring Retainers, and A-178 Control Tube Spring. Cory will know what these are.

The above link provides a picture of what's on the Jeep now. Nothing like the MB arrangement. Ron doesn't show it yet it's advertised as a direct replacement by others. Do you have any idea what the history is here?

Thanks.

Not a Mod., it's OEM to MC/MD/MDA Jeep.
It's called a "Retainer" which was 645086 on CJ-3A, CJ-5, and riveted to the frame. This is an improvement and was used on M-38, M-38A1, and M-170. and bolts on with 3/8" NF Bolts. It is for the A-495 Cross shaft for the Brake and Clutch pedals, Buy it, it will eliminate side play on the pedals. All the dealers recognize this as 801662, BRACKET, shaft retainer, w/bushings assy.

At the least you will have factory tight brake and clutch pedals, there is nothing more annoying than floppy pedals or more impressive than that factory feel.

Joel:

One more question: do you know of a source for the brake pedal assembly (WO800527) bushing; it's not shown or listed in ORD 9 SNL-G758.
Your help is appreciated.

800527 is in Group 12-06 of the ORD 9, there are two other Optional Pedals also listed, 647634 and 647635. 800527 is the one to chaes down at the dealers, it fits CJ-3A, CJ-3B, CJ-5 and the M-38/M-48A1. I have NOS 800527 but it is in my spares. 800527 has been the only one listed from the factory since 1956.

Willys has a note in 1956factory parts list to "mix" the earlier Part numbered pedals with the newer 800527.
