Steering Wheel Epoxy

Post by w30bob » Wed Apr 05, 2017 10:11 am

Hi Folks,

The original steering wheel on my A1 is cracked around the center and on two of the spokes and I want to repair it rather than replace. I was told long ago the best way to repair things like this..........and the cracks on my W30 442's ram air hood, were with dental epoxy. That was a few years back, so I figure before I go hit up my dentist for some glue I'd check with you guys to see what you use. I've used 3M's professional epoxy to repair some cast iron gears in an old 1890's windmill I'm restoring, but is there anything you guys prefer? It would be ideal if it were tintable, whatever you suggest, as I don't want to paint the wheel.

thanks,
bob

Years ago there was a web page where this guy showed how he took a really bad steering wheel and cut small bits and chunks out of it to use to repair a not too bad wheel. He soaked the pieces in acetone and that made them soft enough to pack into the cracks. he brushed the crack area with acetone too, to get the bits to stick. Once he had filled in the cracks he sanded the area and you could hardly see the repair. That site is no more but I have printed off photos someplace if I could find them.

Here is the link to the post. Chaz had not been on the G503 since 2012. viewtopic.php?f=4&t=11438&start=0#p59064

Any one know what happened to Chaz?

I use Plastic Repair. Simple as that...similar products are available in the States.
Used a dremel and ground out the cracks and the edges of the missing bits, sanded it back, sprayed it and gave it a final clear coat.
This is a Morris Steering wheel I did.

Yes I have done that; take a piece of old steering wheel, like the one I lost on I 74, if you find it. Take a wood rasp and make a pile of green plastic powder. Mix it with clear epoxy to make a paste and press that into the cracks. After you file and sand it off it will look pretty good.
