Anybody Make an SS Exhaust for M38A1?

Post by w30bob » Wed Mar 15, 2017 9:49 pm

Hi Guys,

M38A1 Newbie here. I can't seem to find anyone who makes a copy of the original exhaust system in stainless steel. I find that a bit odd with the popularity of this vehicle. I did a Google search and found an old post on here that said to look in Supply Line/Army Motors.......which I did, but didn't see anything. Does anyone know if such an animal exists?

thanks,
bob

Never heard of any being marketed. There are some complicated angles on the muffler end of the extension pipe which are critical. Some of the repros over the years have been off. If that end is not fabricated correctly, the muffler will not mount at the correct angle. And should you find a shop that will attempt making one up, be sure it is the M-38A1 extension pipe as it is longer than the similar appearing M-38 pipe by a couple inches with different angles at the muffler.

Ben:
How different is a CJ-5 exhaust from an M38A1's? I suppose it would be engine size and a flanged outlet for water fording extension, but I'm not sure how far off AMC went with the CJ from the M38A1.

Jeep kept the same CJ-2A thru CJ5 front exhaust Pipe, long Exhaust Pipe and Muffler for the first CJ-5's.
The 4 Cyl 55-71 CJ-5 came with two options, a one piece exhaust pipe between the head pipe and the muffler (same pipe as on late CJ-2A thru CJ-5 or a two piece that was made for CJ-5 4 Cyl that had a Winch PTO. These all had slip joints with clamps, the M-38/M-38A1 had bolted and gasketed flanges.
The CJ Pipe had a 90 Degree bend at the muffler as the mufflers were perpendicular to the frame rails. The M-38/M-38A1 mufflers mounted diagonally at the rear. Not sure if the every day muffler shops with benders could replicate the short tricky bend at the rear of the M-38/M-38A1 extension ( long pipe). Some of the GI Issue pipes had a plating.
Two totally different set ups. SS would be neat tho for a show Jeep.
