I'm tired of rusted out tanks, does anyone sell poly or plastic tanks for the a-1?

No one at present, although I understand there is one in the works.

In 2001 I had an original M38 gas tank that was rusted with so many small pinholes it looked like a duck hunter had used it for target practice. I ended up taking it to a company that used a system called Gas Tank Renu. First they brazed each hole then ground them down and coated the inside and outside with a sealant that then went into an oven at about 1,500 degrees. It is still holding gas to this day and from the outside you can't tell it ever was touched.

Look them up on the internet for a local dealer near you. The one in Stockton, CA had about ten tanks in their showroom ready for shipment that included vehicles like REO, Auburn and Cord. Not a bad recommendation.

Jeep fuel tanks will last forever if the tank is removed periodically to remove leaves, stones and silt and a little touch up paint to the bare metal.

Most of the tanks that I have had go bad we're bad due to rust on the inside . The MB GPW , M38, M38A1, go bad on the inside and outside like Ben said due to the gas tank well filling up with dirt . Ben , most guys have not owned their jeep for 40 years and are just restoring what they have to work with after the neglect of the past owners . It is a good idea to do what Ben said every few years .Warren Duchesne

Approx what can one expect to pay to have a gas tank ReNu lined?

Or is it based on condition?

I can't speak for this exact vendor or process, but to give you an idea, I took a tank from a M151 to my radiator shop, they boiled it out, soldered a lot of pin holes in the bottom and etched and lined it for $250. With new tanks being cose to double that, it was a good investment.

When I do my Sarge jeep CARS movie look alike jeep made from whatever I have laying around the yard, I would look into a marine fuel tank, you can get them in any generic size and shape you want and drill and mount the holes you need for pick up, sending unit, fill nexk, etc and strap it in place wherever and however you want. No one sees them as they are out of sight.

I think DOT frowns on plastic tanks on the road, so that is why they are for boats. But Bubba does what Bubba needs to do to keep these on the road.
