Fuel tank relocation

Post by gglazar » Mon May 09, 2011 6:32 am

Anybody move the fuel tank from under the seat to under the rear floor? Thinking about doing this and was wondering if there is anything I need to be aware of that I may come across.

You can get the later post 71 CJ tanks or use a DJ tank and update the exhaust sytem to something similar to the host jeep's tank.

If the CJ frame has the reinforcement braces for the pintle hook, they will need to be removed to mount the gas tank in the rear.
A factory CJ tank for frames newer than 1975 may be too wide, if over 15 gallons, the 1976 and later CJ's have wider rear frames and the 20 gallon factory tanks are too wide for an early CJ.

Aero Tanks makes a 20 gallon replacement rear tank for the narrow frame '69-'75 CJ's that may be worth looking at.

I just removed a rear-mounted fuel tank from my jeep. I've purchased a replacement tank to go under the driver's seat. Interested in swapping it for something that I could use. It's a nice fit, and looks to be well made, although it does need a good cleaning. Might be custom, or maybe from some other type of jeep. Just outside of Portland, Oregon. If you are interested, PM me, and I'll email some photos.

In my 49, CJ3A I moved the fuel tank to the rear and yes you have to cut the support braces out. The tank I have is a custom tank and straps a fellow had in his jeep and was removing. I added a fuel port on the driverside rear panel.

Toolman,
We must be building the same jeep. I put a 10 gallon tank from a late fifties DJ in the rear of my jeep. I retained the under seat tank as well though. Dual tanks, double my range.
