Modified NDT or NDCC tread tires

Post by JeeperJim » Wed Sep 15, 2010 6:03 pm

I'v noticed some older European owned CJ2A's and other smaller vehicles that have a what seems to be a NATO equivelant NDT or NDCC tread tire
with siping or other improvements for wet traction.
Has anyone had any experiece with these tires or have knowledge of them?
I'm not a real fan of NDT tires for my old 2A but that is what was original to the jeep so I would like to stay somewhat original while having an improved tread performance on wet roads. Standard NDT tread is "slicker-than-you-know-what" on wet pavement so I'm looking for other options in the 7:00 x 16 size over the traditional street tread. Note: This post is dual purpose because I do have a '51 M38 (not A1) to put on the road in the next year or so too so I may go with the same tire for both jeeps.

Thanks in advance.

I believe what tire you are talking about is the tire that the M- 201 French Hotchkiss jeep had in it's production run.The brand I believe was KLIEBER.You could try the internet for a source.I would think that if they are available, they will be very expensive.

If you want wet traction, there is not muckh that can be done to a NDT/NDCC, but a commercial traed radial. Years ago, tire shops did offer "Microsiping", a series of fine cuts crossways around the circumferance of the tread. It had been over 50 years since I have seen it done.

Tire siping is still being done,in fact a recent Military Vehicle Magaazine had a article on it. When I was trucking I had all my tires siped.

Here is the tire on a European jeep of which country I am not sure. This is the tire that I was inquiring about and appears
to be a much better wet surface tread but still military in appearance.
I wonder if we can get a shipment of these if they are still made.

Those resemble the Swiss NDT. I have some NOS take offf 600X16 in my building. The issue with importing new military tires is that they have to meet D.O.T. Specs and be marked as such. Customs just may question the imported tires and impound them. Not good for your pocket book when that happens.

They would be a good choice for both. I am running the Goodyear version with a very similar traed on my M37 and it performs very well. They are just a tad noisier the the NDCC's until the edges of the tread lugs wear down.

The tread depicted on the STA and the similar Goodyear "X-tra-Traction are excellent in mud and snow, however they are one of the noisiest treads in existance. The USGS CJ-3A and CJ-5 Jeeps I used to service would have those installed before sending new Jeeps into the field.

I can't find the Goodyear tires on the Goodyear web site. Can you post a link for the Goodyear 7.00-16 Custom Xtra Grip Hi-Miler?

Thanks.
