Oil bath to dry filter air cleaner conversion

Post by jeeper50 » Fri Nov 27, 2009 4:11 am

Is a kit available or has anyone removed the guts out of a factory oil bath cleaner and fitted a replacable dry filter into their housing? I heard there is something avail for a MB style aircleaner, any links to suppliers or info?

I believe the air bath filter is designed to gently lubricate the top of the head for the flat head motors.
I have a straight air filter, not the original housing, and wish I had the oil set up...

No worrys mate as long as you don't fill the oil bath air cleaner above it's full line the oil will stay in the air cleaner's bottom cup. The oil is suppose to help catch dirt not lube anything on the engine.

Any oil coming through the oil bath filter will have fine dirt in it, which will cause wear in your engine! The oil bath filter is probably the #1 reason for worn bores in the early jeeps.

If your jeep is sucking oil from your air cleaner into the induction manifold you have one of two problems:

1-TOO MUCH OIL IN THE CLEANER BOWL You fill it only to the full line.
2-You are using too light of an oil weight. You are suppose to use the same oil you put in the engine. However if you are using 20 weight or lighter oil or multigrade 5W?? or 10W?? oil in the engine try to use straight 30 weight in the cleaner.

Oil bath air cleaners have served the industry well for well over 75 years and they don't dump their oil into your carb unless something isn't right. It's that simple!

Any oil vapor picked up by the air passing over the has to pass thru the gauze in the upper body where the dust is filtered out.The purpose of the air cleaner is to remove dust from the air before it passes on thru the carburetor. The Oil used in the filter is normally the same seasonal grade as used in the engine. During WWII it was common practice (per the Lubrication Order) to install used crankcase oil in the Air Filter during oil changes. Regular servicing and cleaning of the Air Cleaner is required for efficient operation.

Thanks for the good advice on the correct grade of oil to use in the filter. I would however also be interested in a paper air filter replacement. I see they exist already for GPW, MB and GPA Jeeps and claim to provide better protection and improve running (advertised in Supply Line Dec 2010). Has anyone heard of these being produced for later models military or civilian?

I had to source new rubber seals for the air cleaner to go above and below the filter and found the perfect size at Home Depot. They are Kohler toilet seal rings. Check page 34 on my thread for the part numbers and photos of the correct ones.
