Starter motors
For vehicles with the 129 ring gear and newer style enclosed drive starter motor...here is some info you need to check out.
01 78220X 12V Starter Nippon Denso Toyota Landcruiser 2F gasoline engine will fit perfectly just with minor modification (enlargement) of the 2 mounting holes. The number is an OZ one so may be different in the States.

Re: Starter motors
I found this pre engaged starter fitted to a willys mb jeep, it came off a massey ferguson combine so not reduction geared , nice and quiet in operation , sounds lovely and no wear on the ring gear as it engages before it starts, I also discovered that a upgrade pre engaged starter from a hotchkiss can be re wound to 12 volts and then fits straight on so if any of you have 12 volt battery's on your ww2 jeeps or hotchkiss jeeps this is a superb upgrade, sounds refined and the ring gear is protected from the slam bang from standard starter that is spinning its cog as it hits the ring gear

Re: Starter motors
the first picture is showing the Hotchkiss m201 starters pre engaged but not reduction geared starters that have been re wound to 12 volts, they are very smoth in operation with a combined brake on the back so they dont free wheel on after cranking

Re: Starter motors
Wonder which model Massey Ferguson combine ??
I was a Massey service Tech. back in the 70's & early 80's.
I am thinking one of the early models.
MF 205 & MF 300. These were both gas powered.
Later was the MF 410 - Chevy in-line 6 cyl. gas and MF 510 - Chevy small block V-8 gas.
Later was the MF 750 & MF 760, which were both Perkins diesel.
The starter on these were much larger than the starters in the pictures.

Re: Starter motors
I have researched it and the pre enguaged 12 volt starter on my friends willys mb is from a jaguar 4.2. the starter was an enclosed encapsulated end support type but that part had been cut off and the 9 tooth gear changed for a 10 tooth from an old willys 6 volt bendix, this had been welded onto the jaguar starters bendix, it works so well but the modification is a good afternoons work, the mounting holes had been drilled out larger and possibly the diameter of the end of the shaft may have been reduced, worth all the effort as the smooth action and quiet operation of the more refined pre engaged starter is the reward

Re: Starter motors
one of the mounting holes on the starter has been elongated but looks like the locator flange holds the starter in the correct place, this is farmyard mechanics at its finest , who ever did this , hats off to you because it works so nicely and the jeeps ring gear is protected from the effects of the the early ww2 type slam bash starter, Dont be fooled that you can buy a reproduction 12 volt version of the 6 volt auto light starter, I have discovered It is actually a 6 volt with 12 volt labelling so will not change anything apart from relieving you of a huge amount of money and gradually destroying the ring gear, wire one up to a 12 volt battery to compare with the 6 volt original and you will discover they are no different
