Third line from the top has the branch maintaining the trailer... like the Quartermaster Corps, Ordnance Dept or NOM.
I cannot read that line on your plate, can you read it?

Re: Navy and USMC Registration Numbers
From the pictures I have on my computer I am also not able to make anything out. Here is another view, a bit more straight on, but still not decipherable. I can look in person when I get to my shop this weekend, although I know it is very un readable for the most part, unless I try to clean it somehow to get the oxidation off. Thanks for the replies, Mark!

Here is a real close up... I think it may be corroded past the point of recognition.

Re: Navy and USMC Registration Numbers
Jeff is it possible to get a picture of this jeep .
I have USN 134617 it was also with the Marine Corps Air Station North Carolina ( I believe Cherry point )
With a Hood number 3-964 in Yellow and a D near the side steps of the jeep
The USN are in white.
also found the original Blue Drab Numbers on the Hood 20360102
I am Trying to trace the history of this jeep
Marine Corps to US Navy then was sold to a Fire Dept, Then to a farmer who used it as a Snow Plow Vehicle
Thank You
Tom

Re: Navy and USMC Registration Numbers
Please can someone guide me in the right direction. I’m ecstatic, believe I just purchased a 1953 Willy M38A-1 used by the USMC possibly in the Korean War. I have finally revealed a serial number, 40675 yet can’t find anything with regards to her. She has markings on hood, USMC though in white not yellow. Also, the vehicle number underneath USMC is 529393. Hoping someone can help. Thank you so very much.

Re: Navy and USMC Registration Numbers
I have Navy MB 294031 (June 24, 1944) with documentation showing it served until 1953 at the New York Naval Shipyard. The Jeep was a daily driver for the last 10 years until I decided last month to take it down for preservation and restoration. The tub has likely not been off since it left Toledo in June 1944.

Hi John, and your friend, Woody!
I looked at you PM and email and thought it best to reply here. This is from an old article I wrote many years ago now:

Yes, BobN, I have that listed in My list of Navy jeeps.
Three kinds of jeeps were used by the Navy.
1. Contract jeeps, i.e. MB-NOM, MB-NOM-12, MB-NAVY-MZ-1, MB-NAVY-MZ-2. To date it appears
Contract documents have yet to be found on Navy jeeps. We know they were produced, but in most cases not how many.
2. Jeeps under contract with the Army that were diverted under some kind of agreement with the Navy.
This includes 50 MA viewtopic.php?t=19081
653 GPW made in 1942 under QMC contract 11424 and 1310 MB in 1945 under ORD 33-019-3339.
So far the only difference between a standard jeep and these diverted jeeps may be in lieu of a USA number at the factory, these jeeps may have had USN marked on them or unmarked at all.
3. Jeeps obtained by the Navy/USMC by whatever means from the Army, used as Navy jeeps.
viewtopic.php?t=55684&start=15
Ok, now look at this thread back in 2005.
viewtopic.php?t=224312
And if you look at page "one" of the current thread you can see the Navy really skipped around with painting numbers. I will say that it is possible they may have been in the same number range as they appear to maybe be in June 1944, and as such were obtained by the Navy from the Army... #3 on the above list.
As to the exhaust and wheels... they were not factory and I cannot even guess what happened to them in some Navy motorpool, Depot or Shipyard.
Mine was repainted twice from 1944 to 1950 and though I know that it had yellow numbers to start with (as I found them on both sides) the white and black repaint numbers were lost when it was repainted white by a car dealer in 1961.
My advice is don't believe anything you read or hear unless the source has documentation!
