CJV-35/U 10099 - USMC Jeep Rescue !!

Post by 70th Division » Mon Jul 25, 2022 7:39 pm

Hello,

A friend told me about an old jeep that someone had, that was for sale.
I discovered that it was what in known as a Willys Overland V-35/U Jeep, or commonly called a CJV-35/U.
The serial number is 10099, and has a matching title. This jeep was built in 1950.

Well the jeep is in rough shape, and I knew that I needed to save this jeep, and put it on my restoration list, and it is a long list :D :D
I really like the jeep, and the fact that it is number 99, out of 1000 jeeps made for the USMC, via a Navy contract with Willys Overland in 1950.
The jeep shares items with the Willys MB, and the Willys CJ3A.
Pretty interesting, and a unique Military jeep model that most people have no idea even existed.
It had combat wheels from the factory, and was the last 6 volt Military Jeep ever made.
This particular jeep has a late 1945 MB engine in it, whether it is a replacement engine, or some maybe had an MB engine during initial production, I don't know. But with an MB engine it certainly was worth getting !!
It was a transition between the MB and CJ3A to the V-35/U , and the later M-38.
This jeep has features that are seen in all 4 jeeps.

The U designation stands for Underwater , being a jeep that could land in the water and come ashore during amphibious landings.
This jeep was designed expressly for that purpose as a radio jeep, with a powerful radio in the back, to be landed on invasion beaches.

It is a wonderful jeep, and a window to a small exclusive group of only 1000 post World War II, but pre- Korean War, Military jeeps.
This jeep was used by the US Marines, a handful were sent to Holland and the Dutch Marines.

I am happy to now own this jeep !!
Certainly looking forward to its restoration some day.
The floors are rusted away, and half the rear floor was cut out to install a giant pto driven winch, that I think was used to raise and lower a front snow plow, but here in Florida. A bubba special :D
The winch cable ran from the back, through the hatch in the windshield, to a pulley, bumper mounted in front of the hood !
The jeep was found on a cattle ranch in central Florida, and has a 1969 title.

Here are the pictures as it arrived today !

I do love it 😁 !!!

I would like to know if any of these Jeeps were sent to Korea for the Korean War ??
Have any pictures been found of these jeeps there during the War ?
These jeeps were all delivered in 1950, so it is highly likely some were rushed over there !

The original front bumper is still on the jeep.
WW2 type tow rings were once installed on the bumper, the bolt holes can be seen.
Resized_20220725_171255.jpeg
The USMC hood number tracings can be seen, but I haven't yet discovered the number.
Resized_20220725_171227.jpeg

This corner view is where the antenna mount was located.
Resized_20220725_171113.jpeg
Here we can see the original dash data plates.
Resized_20220725_171131(1).jpeg
This jeep shared the WW2 MB gauges and speedo.
Resized_20220725_170741.jpeg
The rear view of the jeep, these jeeps had a tailgate with Willys stamped on them, as well as the hood.
The big ugly pto driven winch can be seen.
Resized_20220725_170751.jpeg
Resized_20220725_171001.jpeg
Here we can see where the rear floor was cut away to mount the winch contraption, and the general rust away of the front floors and tool box.
The frame has no rust or damage, especially since the CJ3A had a much thicker and more robust frame than the WW2 MB.

Keep 'em Rolling !!!!

Best Regards,
Ray

Hello,

Here are some additional pictures if this unique Jeep :

The USMC on the side of the hood.
Resized_20220725_152300(2).jpeg
I found some elongated diamond insignia painted above the wheel wells.
Does anyone have any idea what unit this was for ?
In WW2 this type diamond insignia stood for the 1st Marine Division, as marked on their jeeps.
Resized_20220725_170918.jpeg
A different but very similar looking switch like the MB had during WW2.

Here we can see the very unique headlight bezels with these little slots in them.
These jeeps had a metal ring attached to them that resembles a cake pan, sticking out around the headlight bulb.
These headlight bezels are original to this jeep, and are part of the military contract specifications.

Hello,

Some more pictures of the Jeep :

Resized_20220725_171026.jpeg
Here is a good picture of the USMC tow hooks that carried over from all their WW2 spec jeeps.
A very nice feature !!
Resized_20220725_171020.jpeg
Resized_20220725_171036.jpeg
Here we can see the special cut out in the hood, above the passenger side fender, for the snorkel kit that came with these jeeps from the factory.
The bracket is still installed.
Resized_20220725_171044.jpeg
Here we can see a cut out in the floor, right behind the transmission hump.
In this area is where there was an auxiliary power unit generator mounted, that came with these jeeps to run the big radio set that once was mounted in the rear of the jeep.

Resized_20220725_171137.jpeg
Resized_20220725_171148(1).jpeg
I believe the outlines on the rear wheel well show where the very large radio set was mounted, and no rear seat came with the jeeps as the radio took up the entire area between the wheel wells.
Resized_20220725_171216(1).jpeg
Here, the spare tire mount was relocated to the side of the jep, as seen on civilian CJ3A jeeps.
This was originally mounted on the Willys script tail gate, along with a gas can.

Ray

Hello,

Some more pictures :
Resized_20220725_171433.jpeg
This is the original Willys script Military tailgate .

The tail gate is in excellent condition and will be an easy part to restore.
In the above picture we can see the holes where the gas can bracket was mounted.

A nice Willys logo .

Resized_20220725_171449.jpeg
Here we can see the outline of where the spare tire mount was originally.

Here is the MB serial number on the engine that is in this jeep.
imagejpeg_0(36).jpg
The oil bath air cleaner, and 6 volt regulator.
imagejpeg_0(35).jpg
The original data plate mounted on the firewall under the hood.
Serial number 10099.
imagejpeg_0(32).jpg
imagejpeg_0(31).jpg
Here is a good view of the 6 volt regulator, also note the passenger fender is a carry over from the Willys MB as well.

The restoration of this jeep will be a very rewarding project !!

It is a great piece of American and USMC history.

There are about 128 known surviving CJV-35/U Jeeps, and this is one more added to the list !!

I will send the information to the website that has been organized around this great and rare model jeep.

Best Regards,
Ray

Hello Parker,

That is great to know, I think that with the internet, many more of these jeeps are being discovered and identified.
The more that are located, the better historical record can be assembled.

I knew about these jeeps, but never saw one in the wild, but now I have saved this one to do my part to save our History :D :D

Many parts are shared with the CJ3A so restoration will be fairly easy.

Best Regards,
Ray

Hello ,

Thanks Parker !

I see that there is a book about these jeeps that was published, I will order a copy.
I am restoring a 1943 GPW right now, but after a few more projects, this jeep will be on the agenda.
I do see that reproduction front and rear floor panels are available for the CJ3A , which are the same for this military CJ3A version so that is a great thing !!

Hopefully some other owners will post pictures of their CJV-35 U jeeps here on the G, to make a better record of them.

Any time a military jeep, or early CJ's are saved, it is a good thing :D :D :D

Congratulations! Welcome to the rarified arena of very limited production Jeeps. 8)

I've got one myself. Havent touched it yet but its covered up resting quietly until that day. Runs and drives but needs a clutch at a minimum.

You got some of the good stuff with yours. The headlight rings are originals as you noted. The coffee can extensions were reproduced at one time.

The generator and tall regulator are hard to find, I still havent found those for mine. The Scintilla distributor appears to be gone? Again, I have yet to find one.

Your light switch is correct and unique to the CJV-35/U. The pto has been changed. Th original that ran the generator between the seats had no engaging handle, was always on. Then there is the cast iron base and all the gen stuff that sits on it to find. ANd with the rear floors gone Im pretty sure the two battery boxes went away.

But having followed your restorations I a pretty sure you will do the Jeep justice!

Hello Mdainsd,

Thanks, I am happy to join the club !!

I like the jeep, and had to save it , as it was close to being scrapped.
This is what we do :D :D :D !
My plans are to restore it as a running and driving jeep, minus the radio and generator equipment.
I have a running 46 CJ2a, a running CJ3a, and now this jeep.
Once I get a few current projects completed, I will work on all 3 similar jeeps.
Of course this one is pretty rough, but with new floor panels, all spot welded in, the body restoration should be fairly straight forward.
I also have a parts 3a that can donate missing or destroyed parts like the steering column and windshield.
This windshield frame on this jeep is rotted away on the bottom, I have a couple extras that have the hatch in the middle.
The seat frames are plentiful and I have a pile of brand new GE 6 volt headlights as well.

I figure a new set of combat rims, Goodyear 600x16 tires, and she will be on her way to recovery.
The thick frame is perfect.
I think the engine is going to be ok as it is sealed still.
The T-90 is stuck, but those are plentiful as well, and I may have a couple here.
I am glad the tail gate is in close to perfect condition !

As I work on current projects, I always think ahead, and get parts when I see them for future projects, and do a little bit of work here and there on them :D

Here is a great and interesting post on building new headlight rings !!
https://cj3a.info/sibling/cjv35u/guard.html

Now I have to buy some of these cake pans, I hope they are still available :D :D !!
They do look perfect !

Keep up your restoration efforts !!

and

Keep 'em Rolling !!

Best Regards,
Ray

The windshield is like the CJ, not M38, as it has the opening hatch.

The passenger seat is different due to the narrowed tool box, dont remember if it is a bracket or the frame. Memory says its a CJ-2 seat frame?

Original engines have the serial number over the waterpump and lead with a "V".

Hello,
Thanks for that great information !

There is a passenger side seat bracket that surprisingly is still on the jeep !

I will see if any of the cj seats I may have would fit.

The windshield on the jeep has the opening hatch, and I have a good other one with the hatch, and also I think I have one without the hatch.

It will be a project for sure, but as you can see, needs a lot if floor repairs.
Also, both rear wheels are locked, so there would be another area of interest 😁.

But with positive thinking, I will get in running again!

I do like the idea of finding this model jeep, and adding yet another model Military Jeep to the collection !!

Ray

Hello,

I guess the first thing to do is to get rid of all the bubba garbage, and get it removed from the Jeep !!
I would like to see if I can get the engine turning over, and proceed from there.
Work on this jeep will be done just a little at a time, in between working on my GPW and MB project.

But I may just be able to get some items done.

Best Regards,
Ray

Hello,

Thanks Mark !!

She will ride again, and I am very glad I saved her from being scrapped.
It would have been waste to scrap her, and a loss of our Jeep heritage !!

What an interesting jeep , and I will buy that book !

Thanks for the link :D

Ray
