Mike
does it have lifting rings on the front bumper, and on the bumperettes in the back? or tow hooks in the front?
After WWll was over. the Marines got a LOT of low mileage like new jeeps from the army during the turn in of equipment when the war ended.
great find on your jeep!!! Keep us posted.

Mike,

Haven't seen any updates. Frank gives good advice for clues and potential lineage.

Tie down rings and front bumpers don't always survive after 75 years but the rear cross member usually does, this was the case with mine.

For a USMC contract:
1. Look for hole on the top of each frame rail behind the upper bumper gusset for the ram horn hook rear bolt.
2. Look for a hole on the driver's side cowl for the dyneto wiper wiring harness.
3. Look on the rear cross member to see if there are holes for bolts instead of rivets to secure it. This is where the rear tie down rings are attached.

For a USMC radio contract (NOM 12, MZ-1, MZ-2):
1. Same as above but no brackets for the rear seat. This is probably the best tell after 75 years.
2. Maybe Mark Tombleson will weigh in on the serial number as part of a radio jeep contract range (most likely MZ-1 if #1 above is evident).
3. A cut out in the floor by the shifter for the drive belt for the radio power supply.
4. Mounting holes in the floor for battery boxes and cables as well as the tops of the wheel wells for the radio boxes.

If it is a radio jeep there are more contract modifications but this is enough for now.

A non USMC contract will be a standard jeep, painted forest green over OD. Look under the hood, body, and inside the glove box for OD paint.

Post War, look for undercoating on the underside of the body.

No matter what, it is most likely a jeep that belonged to the Marines at some point in it's life. It would probably not have been rebuilt and mixed in with Army jeeps. After Korea most of the MB's and GPW's were taken out of the Marine's inventory.

Good Luck,
Peter

Mike,

A couple of observations. The May 43 GPW USMC Ambulance Jeep I restored has an original USMC number 79576 and is now located at the National Museum of the Marine Corps, Triangle, VA. The USMC number on your hood may be very late war or post war. Is it possible they hood is not original to the jeep ? One other thing to look for, during pre Korea and Korea, when a total overhaul was done, the original numbers may have been stamped on the front/mid outer frame on the passenger's side around the area below the body side step. I have seen one jeep that was stamped that way. I have also talked to a Korea Marine veteran who worked stateside overhauling jeeps in a SW Depot and they stripped the jeeps down to the frames, then rebuilt them regardless of whether the parts were original to that specific jeep. He said these were WW II jeeps they rebuilt and if they screwed up, they would be sent to a rifle platoon in Korea.

For what it is worth,
