USN tag on Ben Hur Trailer

Post by Rustman » Wed May 27, 2020 1:22 pm

Sorry it's not a Jeep and we have our own section of the forum for trailers but it seemed more expedient to ask here. I obtained some composite (wood) body Ben Hur parts recently that included the corner uprights and one of them has a USN/Navy Property tag. Very simple tag. Reads 299 USN 004094. I'm trying to understand how that tag might have dated or otherwise referenced the trailer it once was attached to. The 004094 doesn't fit into any sequence of known USA Registration numbers for the Ben Hur G518 trailers, nor does adding 299 to the front of that. Thoughts? Opinions? Get back in the trailer forum where you belong?

Equipment tag for that navy base. We have them on all of our equipment here where I work, just now the tags are adhesive tags. You still see some of the metal tags on older equipment. Just a tag for the base to keep track of gear.

Frank,

Thanks I was hoping it was more than that. But honestly not surprised. I'm familiar with the red and white property tags we used in Iraq and Afghanistan. Department of State has gone to a little square QR code they can read with a scanner.

As Frank said, that is a property tag and from what I can see it may be post war as the others I have seen during the war or slightly after have three lines of data.

The round tag, in your link, I think I have a couple that I took off stuff that was being scrapped thinking they were from WW2.

Newbie question here. Would this trailer be painted Navy grey? I knew the vehicles were painted Navy grey or U.S. Marines green, but didn't now how far down the vehicle food chain the repainting went.

I'll answer your question in two parts.

First it is my understanding that very often during WW2 they were NOT painted anything other then OD. But I could be wrong about that.
Second yes they were painted grey at some point. I know these parts have grey paint on them and I've seen photos of others.
