Re: USMC NoM Center Canvas Curtain?

It must be rigid. If it was canvas it would be attached to the top bow. But it meets the roof several inches behind the top bow.

Curtain, Blackout MBC-1, page 508, Volume 2 of Lloyds MB books... my chapter! :D

It does not show the complete set up but has the window.

Where did that photo come from Ferrell?

My guess is a local shopmade sand curtain for back seat passengers. The solid disc wheels and the long angled-down windshield catches on the hood indicate this is an early low-windshield slat grille MB. The extensive sand still on the NDT tires suggest this jeep was at the Desert Training Center in California. I imagine the back seat passengers got nicely sandblasted riding at speed across the windy desert, while the front seat passengers were mostly protected by the windshield. This canvas curtain gave the back seat passengers some parity.

Now that is funny! :D :D

Fred, do you remember this photo? The caption says that is snow and is a MB-Marine with its early features. I cannot remember this photo at all? :?

Mark:

I do not remember this photo either, so someone must have snuck it into your chapter. With the light substance on the tires being described in your caption as snow, I was going to head north and suggest it might be a very early Canadian contract C.D. LV-241/242 jeep. But although the early Canadian MBs came with four lift rings, they did not use the Marine Corps tow hooks which are visible on this early slat grille, so its not an early MB built for Canada.

Notwithstanding your caption, I still think the light substance on the tires is sand because there is no snow anywhere else on the wheels or on the jeep. Snow is sticky and should be all over that jeep if there was that much just on the perimeter of the tires.

Whatever its provenance, it appears some canvas maker was trying to convert the lowly jeep into a dual cowl phaeton for some high ranking officials in the rear seat, and did the best they could given the short 80" wheelbase.

Looks like mud on the wheels, sand wouldn't cling to the sidewalls evenly. Two upright poles on either side of the curtain inside the canvas must slip down behind the seats and possibly have string to attach as they pass the front bow intersection.
Note the possible 'field' with distant trees seen through the windshield, the application of cutting the jeep out making the background white hit on the windshield frame as well, but left a background view of the test field visible through the windscreen. It may or may not be on a concrete pad the editor may have blotted the bottom surface removing tracks and such.
Must have been fun getting into and out of the rear area with the top up and screens in place.

Guys,

The NOM 12 Parts List shows the Top Assembly as part number A-3384, below that it lists the Top Back Curtain as part number A-3393.

This would not only mean that there is a part number but since the top is a different part number form the ORD part number then it is Forest Green like the side curtains (1/2 doors).

By the way the MB pictured appears to be a 1st contract NoM based on the frame hooks and the long windscreen latches on the hood. The windscreen looks to be the standard type even with the longer latches.

I don't see the Dyneto wiper motor but it may be lost in the shadow. It appears to have had some field test but has not got a USMC registration number yet. Alos it looks like it might have an oval muffler.

Peter
