Passengers seat box in radio jeeps.

Post by Mark Tombleson » Fri Oct 19, 2018 1:23 pm

Caption says 3rd Marine Division on Iwo Jima.

Note the box with the hinges at the top back of the box and one of the wire catches on the slanted side you see on Navy equipment boxes.

Caption says 4th Division on Iwo Jima.

Note the same style box in the jeep in the foreground. The other radio jeep in the background also seems to have the same box.

Lloyd brought this to my attention recently and wondered if it is wood or metal and what would be in the box?

It looks metal to me... with that wire catch, and Lloyd and I thought it would hold the tools and parts that would normally be in the glove box and two back corner boxes, none of which are accessible on the contract radio jeeps. It may also be large enough to hold the starting crank and tire pump?

Anyone see any more photos of these boxes?

Lloyd says theses photos are on page 215 in volume 3... or maybe it was 4.

Where was this box made? SF USMC depot, some Navy shipyard like the radio equipment installation, or ???

I think the first picture is the removable lid from the radio box sitting on its edge on top of the dynamotor box.

I mean the box where the front passengers seat usually is, Robin.

To all,

Finally back into my own quarters from a trip to the SW.

The style/shape, not the top cover may well be the same as the box for the WWII USMC ambulance jeep.

Just my two cents and no I don't know who made the box for the ambulance jeeps, but may have been MT shop.
