1st Marine Division UNIS
I know, I know! Just what you want another thread about Marine Corps Unit Numerical Identification System or UNIS. We Marines love our acronyms. After looking at allot of pictures and information I have a theory. Wait here me out. I know we are all familiar with the system used by the 3rd, 4th, & 6th Marine Divisions that made up the 5th Amphibious Corps. These are the Horizontal Diamond, Half Circle, and Rectangle made up of dashed lines. There was some confusion with the diamond initially that it was for 1st Marine Division but now suspected to represent 3rd Maine Division. Below is a good break down of the system. Most of the pictures I have seen of this system have been from Iwo Jima and only for 3rd, 4th, & 6th who participated in the battle. I have not seen the dashed Vertical Diamond for 1st Marine Division, Dashed Square for 2nd Marine Division, or Dashed Circle for 6th Marine Division. The 1st, 2nd, and 6th Marine Divisions made up 3rd Amphibious Corps. So I’m thinking the dashed system was used by the Marine divisions of 5th Amphibious Corps for the invasion of Iwo Jima.
I feel that the Divisions under 3rd Amphibious Corps used a different system to identify their units. My feelings are bases 1st Marine Division General Order 174, Standard Operating Procedure for Marking Equipment dated January 1945 and pictures. I have tried to find pictures with dates and specific units to confirm this. At least for 1st Marine Division I feel that the information based on the order is correct. Unlike 5th Amphibious Corps that used a symbol for the whole division and a number for the Regiment and Company it looks like at least for 1st Marine Division they used a solid symbol for the Regiment
know some of this information has been posted before. I reposted it so anyone new to the subject wouldn’t have to search for it.
Please provide your thoughts, opinions, and pictures

1st Division General Order 174, January 1945. SOP for Marking Equipment. This must have gone into effect prior to 1945 since allot of these pictures were on Peleliu.

Re: 1st Marine Division UNIS
I haven't found any pictures for 1st Marine Division at Peleliu. It was expected that fighting would only last 3 days. Very few photographers and film crews went ashore. It ended up going from Sept 15th - Nov 27, 1944. The 1st Marine Division was pulled from the front lines after 6 days of intense fighting and sustaining 70% casualties. I wondering if this may be the reason for so few pictures of 1st Marine Division.
I will continue to post other pictures as I find them and ask that you do the same. I have found some other Unit Identifiers but have been unable to ID the unit associated with them.

Re: 1st Marine Division UNIS
Realize this thread it a few years old, but does anyone have the link to the Critical Past clip where the still frame of the radio Jeep came from?
The UNIS is the same as my Jeep and I am wondering if others from the unit are shown in the clip!
Many thanks!
