Re: USN original data tag
You see what I have, Frank.
Just looking at the documentation it is pretty clear they are Army GPWs but were not issued a USA number as no number is listed. These 653 GPWs must have some documentation not come to the light of day as to their serial numbers but if we find a trend, for example, say GPW 70000 to 70653 that we say are possibilities the GPWs are in... we can look at those jeeps in detail to see if they have an known Navy features.
These 653 GPWs are not contract USN/USMC jeeps and show no contract features. There was some discussion that USN may have been stenciled on the hood where the USA number usually is but I cannot remember anyone coming up with a photo.
As for any contract GPWs, I don't think Jim Gilmore or anyone else has said there are any contract GPWs for the Navy/USMC... only the GPs listed above.

Re: USN original data tag
Mine was painted green at the factory. A white USN was painted on this green layer. Then the whole vehicle was sprayed grey, and a black hood number was applied without USN markings. I dont know when/where each step happened....

Re: USN original data tag
Inspite of being hyperconfused I am still going to restore my Jan '44 MB as US Navy and in grey. Would it have just USN on the hood or USN and a number. If it has a number what would be an approximate number for it's D.O.D. At the risk of being pilloried I just want to put a number that may have applied even though it was never US Navy. Also what would be on the front bumper and rear body or even possibly on the sides. I want to restore it as USN to go with my Dodge WC51 which is in USN markings. I gleaned as much imformation off various USN websites and a picture I found in a referance book. A guy I contacted in the US Navy museum said there was very little recorded on USN vehicles though he did say that inventory numbers were issued as the vehicles came along and not in batches of types. ie A GPW/MB could have the next number to a staff car or truck. I don't know how true that is. Sorry to ask so many questions but I don't want another O.D. jeep!

Your jeep could have just USN, USN XXXXX, or US NAVY XXXXX on the hood or nothing at all as a Navy jeep as some had the markings on the side instead as well as the front or rear. As a guess for the number I would run in the 53XXX to 55XXX range but you could use a higher number if you want to reflect a later 'procurement' by the Navy. Markings could be black, white, or yellow.

Re: USN original data tag
Bringing back an old topic. To the owners of GPW 70219 and 70355(?) the Navy jeeps listed in this post. Next to the data tag on my tub, which was on the outside of body (see the picture above that Maurizio posted for me), the same number was STAMPED into my tub, F223A. If you don't have a tag on your tub, could you check to see if any number was ever stamped into your body? The stamp would be somewhere just aft of (after ) the shovel bracket and would be close to the 6 machine screw heads which go thru the body to hold the fire extinguisher bracket which is on inside of the tub by the drivers left foot. Let me know if you find a number stamped there. Best wishes; Leo

Re: USN original data tag
The other bit of information that might be nice to know is which plant(s) were the positively identified Navy GPWs built? Were all 653 Navy contract GPWs built only in one plant?

For the owners of GPW 70219 and 70355, what is the stamping in your mystery box on your data tag?

Re: USN original data tag Contract reearch
Resurrecting this topic to see if anyone can help me track down contract information. I own this jeep and would love to have any contract documentation on it. This jeep is one of the 653 best I can tell but the contract on this data tag apparently was issued by Secretary of the Navy's office based on the "NOd" on the data plate. Somewhere along the line it was most likely rolled into the second Ford contract but it would be nice to find any documentation to that effect. Looking on military web site which deals mainly with clothes they agreed all contracts were sequentially numbered so wonder what 1624 and 1626 were let out to procure. If anyone has places I can check out on line to keep narrowing my search I would greatly appreciate it.
