B-25 "Old Glory" crash in Stockton, CA

Post by Tapper02 » Sun Sep 20, 2020 10:11 am

Just heard about the "Old Glory" putting down in a field outside of Stockton, CA. Reportedly mechanical failure, no serious injuries. Saw her parked on the tarmac at North Island this past week, along with a TBF Avenger on their way back from Hawaii...I hope she's salvageable.

Thats too bad, glad no serious injuries. I know there were non aboard, but its not going to help the case to continue letting passengers ride these planes.

Ok, glad everyone's alive and no life threatening, etc.
Here's what i don't get:
"Earlier this month, “Old Glory” was one of 14 vintage military aircraft visiting Hawaii to participate in the 75th Commemoration of the End of World War II, including a parade. To get to Hawaii, “Old Glory” hitched a ride in San Diego aboard the USS Essex aircraft carrier. It was not reported how it returned to the mainland and what its flight plan was at the time of the crash."

They hitched a ride on a GHOST SHIP? USS Essex was scrapped at Kearny, NJ in '75 or so...."Essex was scrapped at Kearny, New Jersey.[13]"

And IF they had a direct flight back from Hawaii, I bet all three are just glad they made landfall before a mechanical failure forced them down....a long swim at night would have had a drastically different outcome.

EDIT for clarity we find: "USS Essex (LHD-2) is a Wasp-class Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) in service with the United States Navy. The amphibious assault ship was built at what is now Huntington Ingalls Industries in Pascagoula, Mississippi." So it's not the WWII Aircraft Carrier....WAW

It was a short hop to Stockton from Vacaville, both engines quit at the same time about 6 miles from Stockton. Probably a fuel issue. Airframe is totaled, glad it was not worse for the crew.
