Col. Chuck Yeager Crash In NF-104A

Post by D.R.H. » Mon Dec 16, 2019 12:17 am

This happened at Edwards Air Force Base, 10 Dec. 1963. Video is accompanied by a pretty cool soundtrack. The problem with the scene in The Right
Stuff is that there would way more support personnel around to see that aircraft was properly prepared to leave the ground. The Control Tower would also have plenty of higher ranking personnel too, to watch the event unfold, and the Tower Crew would have known that a special flight was to take place that day. Enjoy!!

Makes me wonder why they even thought an F-104 would be stabile and the engine would even work at that altitude.
From what I have heard, an F-104 was barely stabile at sea level with those short wings.
Described as being more like a guided missile with a jet engine and a pilot.
Obviously, the thrust vectoring ports did not work.
