WWII air field wind sock color/material?

Post by RobL » Mon Apr 09, 2018 5:34 am

Hi. Were windsocks made from silk and were they orange(ish) or red? Or white? I haven't found anything in a manual or tech order that specifies for WWII overseas airfields (either permanent or temporary). Links to pix perhaps?

Is there a publication that specifies how airfields should be laid out? Structures? Communications? Weather instruments etc?

Many thanks for any suggestions and guidance on where to pursue the info.

I remember the WWII Tetrahedron at Dow Field being yellow. Best I can remember, the Windsock was too.

Call Fagen Fighters Museum or Planes of Fame.

I agree. I am thinking Tetrahedrons were the indicator of choice in WWII.
Still have one at the local airport. Older than dirt. More of a conversation piece.
Now days, Fluorescent Orange wind socks are used.
Not sure that answers RobL's question.
