WARBIRDS HAVE "DEATH WOBBLE" TOO

Post by Joe Gopan » Sun Mar 25, 2018 6:31 pm

The tricycle landing gear of Warbird Aircraft, Civilian, too have a "shimmy damper' installed to dampen the nose wheel should it decide to shimmy. The shimmy damper is that cylinder shaped object mounted on the nose gear just above the wheel.
Certain Helicopters, especially the H-19, were susceptible to "ground resonance" if not brought under control would end up shaking the helicopter to self destruction. The H-19, had a 4 wheel landing gear and if conditions were just right and the aircraft touched down on one wheel first, it would bounce back and forth from wheel to wheel with increasing frequency until the helicopter fell apart.

Nose wheel wobble is an evil, insidious thing. It appears out of no where and once it starts, slowing down does not make it go away. It usually gets worse.
Full stall landings, touch down at the slowest possible speed or wheel landings, touching down on the mains first and hold the nose off until speed dissipates are two ways to help the problem from surfacing. Either way, the aircraft is at it's slowest speed before the nose wheel touches the runway surface. You could land on grass. That helps dampen the wobble.
Holding back pressure on the elevator sometimes helps. Sometimes ! Keeps weight off the nose wheel long as possible. May not be possible in a strong cross wind.
If sever wobble occurs, a check of the rudder and control cables is also advised. All the time the wheel is wobbling and the rudder pedals are dancing back and forth, it is jerking on the rudder cables and rudder itself.
Cause ?
Tire under inflation.
Balance problem
Tire belt damage from a previous hard landing.
Slop in the steering control linkage.
High taxi speed and pilot technic.

I witnessed a Douglas B-26 experience that a number of years ago. It was grounded for a few days until parts came in.

I did not realize that. The computer lock on this post but I was not aware of the outcome. A-26 was Canadian and belonged to Irving Wood Lands.
