Awesome to still see in active 40 years after being built

Do you know what happened to this aircraft?

Steve

No. Sure don't. There are two B-17s in those photos, and another one in the air at the time.

REMEMBERING Captain Slate, USCG

Post by Joe Gopan » Fri May 11, 2018 7:52 am

Remembering Captain Slate, USCG PB1-G Pilot.
I always take a look at the sky in memory of Captain Slate who flew one of the last active military B-17's over my house and our business on May 11, 1956. Captain Slate flew everything in the 40's-60's inventory and had plenty of stories to tell.

ON THIS DATE 63 YEARS AGO

Post by Joe Gopan » Sat May 11, 2019 4:52 pm

It was on this date in 1956 that I last saw an active duty PB1-G (Coast Guard B-17). It was on final to DOW Field, Maine on its return flight from the International Ice Patrol. One of its' pilots was my friend Coast Guard Captain Lester Slate. His home town was 25 minutes away.

September 11, 1956 It was just after 3 PM when the Coast Guard Flying Fortress flew down my street on final to DOW Field.
Pilot was Captain Slate who lived about 20 miles away. Th was the last time it landed at Dow Field.
