Catalina in Sonoma

Post by John Neuenburg » Sun Jul 07, 2019 9:53 am

Lookie what popped into Sonoma Valley Airport, CA last week. A PBY-5 Catalina! (the P-40N factory two seat fighter is based there).

The weird thing is we were 40 miles away in the Russian River area a couple days later and the Catalina flew over heading northwest toward the coast. Coincidence!

It looks like this beautiful N9767 Catalina was coming from France and is owned by the French Flying Warbirds
She was first issued to the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1943.

She has been converted to a forest fire fighter in the past. (Canadair and likely in France)
She is currently nicknamed "Princesse des étoiles".

A movie on that particular PBY.

Dad ( R.I.P. ) would have loved this.
He spent the later part of World War II, as a crew member, in a PBY, flying around the Pacific.
He was a radio operator, when he wasn't a waist gunner.
Thanks for sharing the photo.

The unique and now rare sound of the P&W engines never fails to make me pause and look up as the Catalina, C-47 and B-24 all share that familiar R-1830 sound.
