Motor out and ready for the machine shop. I’ve been working on the scout car as time permits and am making progress. The motor is free and looks good so I am hoping it doesn’t need much.

Down deep in this scout cleaning and prepping the frame for the brake and electrical lines while the motor is at the machine shop. I love this project! I’m not smart enough apparently to right the picture though!

After waiting a few days, I got word back from the rebuilder that the block has no cracks and is good to go. What a relief! He recommended boring it .040 over, installing new valves and grinding the crank. I am happy with the work, very thorough and everything I saw I was pleased with. It was already 020 over from the Depot rebuild but had a good bit of wear to the pistons since then. The motor in this scout has been free and in relatively good rebuildable shape til I got it after all these years. In the process now of prepping the frame and engine compartment for new paint brakes and wiring before I reinstall the motor. The frame and metal surfaces on this scout are remarkably rust free and only really need a moderate brushing/sanding of light surface rust and dirt before priming. Sandblasting could be done, but it should look great without it. I am used to working on rusty East Coast jeeps that need extensive blasting, so this was a real joy and surprise with the Scout Car. You can definitely tell this is a truck from out West. Versus other scouts available at the time, and it was worth it in saving on elbow grease and labor.🙂

I started working on the fenders again Clint. It only took us 13 years between us to get them pounded out. This one had a nasty dimple in the edge and the back side edge was pushed in. I plan to sandblast the fenders after I get the dents looking a little better.

I am having trouble with picture orientation with the iPhone, so I’ll post the fender photos when I get them figured out. :|

This is the final OD coat of the grill slats with brushing and cleaning, no sandblasting. The metal had no rust in this area. Fixed the orientation! The grill armor looks brand new with a little fresh OD.

If anyone has an air intake tube, drivers floor diamond plate, or a driver/passenger seat I would be interested in buying them.
Thanks!

Started exterior prep and paintwork today. I probably won’t do a whole lot more til I finish all the brake and steering work. Just motivation to finish the project seeing some fresh OD.

That chassis is in beautiful shape. Very happy to see it getting restored.

Some more pics. Cylinder head at the machine shop ready for resurfacing.
The OD paint looks pretty good with a moderate surface brushing. I plan to sandblast the doors, both fenders, the wheel wells, windshield armor, original pieces of rear armor, headlight buckets, and some of the smaller add on parts myself. I discovered to my surprise that I actually have an original drivers side upper door assembly(rare as hens teeth to find loose).
Seeing that OD on the scout definitely is motivation to keep things moving along on the project.

Pics from last fall of the rear brake restoration. New wheel cylinders, axle oil seals, checked and repacked inner and outer wheel bearings. Those tires/wheels dismounted are HEAVY.
