Re: Scout Car Restoration Photo Journal
I got the front combat wheels split apart, sandblasted, painted OD 319 and new flap, tube, and tire mounted. I put period looking valve stem caps with the valve stem removal prongs on the valves. Sure looks better now that all that hard work is finished!

Re: Scout Car Restoration Photo Journal
I got around to mounting the front drivers side tire/wheel assembly, fresh paint and fresh new tire. You can almost see the scout car coming together.

Re: Scout Car Restoration Photo Journal
I installed the new steering wheel this week. I found a wheel that was a perfect match without a woodruff keyway, and I filed a new on in with a hand file and fitted it to the column. It turned out great.

Re: Scout Car Restoration Photo Journal
Hi Dan
I found the wheel by luck searching online about 6 months ago, took a chance on it and it worked out great. You have to look for a 17” Sheller wheel with the right width opening for the shaft. If you look for a scout wheel you’ll never find it but people have wheels that will fit a scout. You just have to buy it based on measurements not description.

Re: Scout Car Restoration Photo Journal
Sorry
The measurements are 18” diameter and 7/8” shaft opening with a slight taper and one @3/16” woodruff keyway slot. I had to make my keyway with a hand file to adapt the wheel to my shaft and do some minor hand fitting, but externally it’s spot on 100% correct.

A better view. Now I need to clean, install fresh gaskets and seals, and paint the steering gear and column.

Re: Scout Car Restoration Photo Journal
Now that the steering wheel is fitted, I’ve started on degreasing and rebuilding the steering gear. Notice the red paint around the oil fill fitting and the gloss black base coat on the steering tube. The tube must have been gloss black from the factory and that’s how I will repaint it. It has 2 different shades of OD covering it, so the scout must have been in military service for a while before being surplused.
I was surprised to find out the worm gear bearings and cups are still available under part #400020. The steering sector shaft oil seals are still available under National #323138 steering oil seal. I have an NOS sector shaft and will make a new housing cover gasket. Hopefully it turns out nice.

Re: Scout Car Restoration Photo Journal
I passed another milestone today. I finished replacing the oil seal, gasket, cleaning and paintwork on the Ross steering gear. I fitted the new steering wheel and Ross medallion and I am really proud of the result. Next we will bolt it on, wire up the horn internals and remount the steering wheel.

Re: Scout Car Restoration Photo Journal
By the way, I had a lot of trouble removing the steering wheel until I found a US military M35 series Vehichle steering wheel puller on EBay, worth every penny. Used on M series Vehichles including the dodge M37 and M151 Jeep. Without it nothing else worked. With this tool I had the wheel off damage free in 30 seconds. Search online and eBay for military M35 steering wheel puller, they come up for sale occasionally. Hope this helps someone else avoid a lot of frustration and damaged parts.

Steering group completed and reinstalled. I’m very happy with the result. Thanks to Logan, Curt, and Clint for all the help and encouragement.

My scout car was missing the complete master cylinder pushrod linkage so I had to make one.
9/16 18 12” all thread rod makes a nice replacement master cylinder pushrod coupled with a halftrack plunger.
A 1/2” threaded yoke can be tapped with a 9/16 18 tap to fit the all thread rod and couple up to the brake linkage bracket. The correct diameter Clevis pin is 5/8” diameter and can be cut shorter to fit if it’s too long. If the yoke Clevis pin openings on the yoke are not wide enough diameter they can be drilled out with a 5/8” steel drill bit to fit the brake bracket and Clevis pin.

Re: Scout Car Restoration Photo Journal
Nice job on that. I think you were right a while back Matt in that scout car parts are harder to find than halftrack parts. Keep up the great work!! It's going to be super nice when you are done, I hope I can go for a ride.

Re: Scout Car Restoration Photo Journal
Thanks for the good words Clint. I am hoping I can get it running and roadworthy but not entirely completed by sometime in the next 6 months. If you're up for a trip to MD you are welcome anytime. Restoring it, gathering parts, and figuring how everything fits together has been a real joy, and I don't mean that sarcastically!

Re: Scout Car Restoration Photo Journal
Been a while since I posted. Installed the recored radiator, finished the brakes, new seals and gaskets in the transfer case, rebuilt driveshafts/ U joints.
Too much to remember. Now starting on the wiring harness installation before I get the motor back in. I figure might as well do all I can while the motor is out with all the extra room.
