Scout Car Restoration Photo Journal

Post by clintm20 » Mon Apr 23, 2007 1:07 pm

Follow me in pics as I restore this scout car. Today I removed the bulkhead seperating driver cab from rear crew compartment. It had been welded on (not original) plus mounted with some of the original bolts. The bulkhead is rough so will probably make a new one.

The bulkhead should be welded in place actually, along the top. It keeps the body more rigid, so the doors line up and everything. If the body flexes, you cant close the doors, or the hood, etc. It looks like you have a good one to start with.

Clintm20,
Your "Jeep" looks very nice and will make us all wish we had bought it when you had it for sale. Keep up the excellent work.

Thanks for the compliment Top. I was only going to sell it to raise money for another project I'm wanting, something fully tracked like a Sherman or FV432, however a Sherman is probably out of my league.

Next I'm going to have pics of pulling the tranny and motor so I can get the frame cleaned and painted and the roller welded back on.

Clintm20,
The problem with full tracked vehicles is TRANSPORTATION. Full Tracked vehicles also tend to have weight and width issues. A M3A1 Scout Car will fit in a standard size garage, where most Full Trackes vehicles won't. You can drive the M3A1 Scout Car anywhere you want to go. Keep the photos coming, they are AWESOME! I'm going to work on the '43 MB Jeep I just brought home. My first intent is to get the body off the frame and get the lump of coal on its way back to being a diamond. I'll take some photos of her tomorrow and get them posted. Catch ya' later.

Today dropped the battery box floor. This scout car seems to be pieced together from other scout cars since the front color doesn't match the back. The hood, fenders and front clip don't match and this battery box floor already had the rivets removed and was held in by bolts. It's rusty so I'm replacing it with NOS.

Also in bottom picture is a Haltrack battery floor on left and scout car on right. They are EXACTLY the same except for the left hand bracket on the HT is larger to accomodate the mounting point for the crossmember that runs underneath the tranny.

Clintm20,
This is really cool. We're watching you tear down, restore and rebuild a 100% scale model project. Your perfectly clear photos are making this very enjoyable to view. How about one of you so we know who'se work we're watching? Keep the "In Progress" photos coming. Fantastic Work!

Coming later this week, fender repair 101, here is the before image, nice dents but not much rust, just some surface around the mounting holes for the light and guard.

This update is very boring but grunt work is grunt work. The original set of frame mounts that the rear floorboard support structure bolts to were torched off so I had to remove what was left of the rivets. If this is too much detail let me know and I'll refrain from using so much bandwidth and only post the more 'exciting' stuff.

Are you going to hot rivet the brackets back on? I can send you the tools and rivets if you want them. If you don't have Al's riveting instructions, I'll email them to you.
