Original upper door or not?
I sandblasted this original( I thought) drivers upper door today, but could find no stamped numbers. This thing has to be original, had about 4 layers of OD over primer, rusted bolts, numbers cast into the hinges, footman loops on the inside forever. Do original upper doors have numbers usually? What do you guys think?

Hi Dawgman,
I thought the numbering was on the hood, not the upper folding doors, but no doubt the Scout Car gurus on here will confirm.

Re: Scout Car Restoration Photo Journal
Definitely original hinges, I think some of them did have the numbers on them and some did not but I don't know if it was specific to doors, it might have been. I think I had a set of uppers on the restored car I sold that were identical to your pictures.

Tearing apart front brakes and kingpin bearings. Does anyone have a source for the drag link rebuild kits and the leather end boots?

Oil pan painted and cleaned up. Yes it’s dented ugly, but I haven’t been able to source another better one, and I plan on partially hiding it with the pan armor
The drain plug wouldn’t budge with heat, so I drilled it out and bought an NOS plug to replace it.

Fenders and original armored rear wheel wells sandblasted and cleaned up back from the sandblaster. Will knock out the small dents and then prime them up.

If I may ask, what was the total for machine shop work on the engine? I have four of them laying around and Im thinking of trying for a deal, because of quantity. Thats my plan anyway.

2000 labor and 1100 parts, pistons etc.
Might be a lot to some but it was done right by a man with over 40 years experience in these motors and I wanted it done right once.

Re: Scout Car Restoration Photo Journal
The left front tire was an old Mohawk Chief brand from the 50s and the right front was a Denman which looked pretty good except for a patch of dry rot. I asked a lot of questions about breaking the combats apart on here and on the FB scout car forum and it was hard dirty work, but I finally broke both free. Once I unbolted the two halves, through trial and error I sprayed the beads with wd40 and let them soak overnight. Then I separated the front ring from the tire with the flat end of a digging iron levered under the rim. I flipped the tire over and the did the same all around the rim on the back til the bead gave way. Very hard work but I saved 2 tires for possible spares. At 300$ each I saved a couple tires if I ever need them.and I like the Mohawk chief, neat name.
Thank you to all the guys that gave me advice!

Re: Scout Car Restoration Photo Journal
Rebuilding my front brakes, the front passenger brake return spring was broken. I had no idea it was so difficult to locate. I was told that I wouldn’t find it in the states, no one had it here. I started an internet search and discovered it cross matched with a Studebaker front brake return spring G630 SD643780 and also the split axle GMC CCKW #GM 2030574. I finally ordered a few using the GMC part number from a supplier in Holland.
This might help someone else having the same problem.
