V100 turret

Post by wgtactical » Tue Aug 09, 2022 10:11 am

We just installed the M73 dummies in the V100 turret. We have an original ammo can being sent to us to duplicate as well as original Cadillac Gage drawings for the brass chute that fits between the two guns. Progress a little at a time.

From all accounts I've heard, the M73 was the most desirable weapon system ever fielded by the US military. It's performance and reliability was in a word, "legendary".

They sometimes even mounted a M2HB atop the M73 turret in an effort to save 30 cal ammo, just in case they found themselves in a serious engagement requiring superior firepower.

Transportation guys "borrowed" M73's to make some of the first gun jeeps in Vietnam.
(They could have been M37s and not M73s depending on who "donated" them)

Been searching everywhere for a single photo or an account from a Vietnam veteran that remembers this 504th MP V100 with the nose art "Blood Sweat and Tears" but so far, all the leads have been dead ends, unfortunately. Due to A.O. exposure, many of the veterans who had some experience with the vehicle has since passed away, taking whatever memories with them. The whole project could very well end up being as interesting as a book with lots of pages torn out. Just a regrettable situation for those who had fallen as well as those who will never know about it.
I'll keep trying, that's all I can do.

Thank you,
I got this back in December. I had been admiring it for years along with it's interesting backstory involving a young soldier named Don Tillman and his lost Zippo. One day the owner reached out to me and asked if I would be interested in taking this V100 and finishing it.

The most challenging part so far is finding a single photograph of this vehicle taken while it was in Vietnam. Although there has to be some, the soldiers that would have taken them are becoming fewer as time goes by and so the opportunity to capture those memories and making them part of this restoration are also dwindling, unfortunately.

I've been trying to locate a pair of ammo boxes for the restoration of the M73 turret on Blood Sweat and Tears and after finding out how difficult they are to come by I decided we'd just build some. I received a working example from John McDonald who is well known in the V100 community. The originals being considered as disposable are really thin and flimsy so I went a bit thicker on the repro's. All stainless construction on the boxes as well as the frames that go on the basket of the turret.

I still need to make a few fixtures for the feed guides then final assembly can start.

Progress so far:
