M113 engine oil is low and I'm not sure what the person put in it that went through the power pack or if they even put any new oil in it.
The manual calls for 15w40 but most of the info I've found on line says that it's best to run a straight 40w, which i'm thinking about Rotella 40w
Will change out the oil and fuel filters while I'm in there since I don't know if the guy changed them out as well, the oil filter will need to be changed out since I don't know what is in the engine and age.
Regarding the transmission, the manual calls for a 15w-40 and I was thinking just using Rotella T4 15w-40 in it. Last show the transmission started to slip and would take a few moments to lock up and move forward once fuel was given. What do other M113A2 owners use in the transmission?

I don't know why anyone would call for a straight 40 weight oil as the 15W 40 is a 40 Wt oil at normal operating temps. With a multi grade oil you get the advantage of having a lower resistance to flow at colder temps which is a good thing. (And you are in an area with colder temps in the winter.) The manual is obviously a modern day manual and is recommending modern day superior oil specs for both the engine and transmission. Its also good to stay with a brand like Rotella as they have been keeping the Zink level up in there oil.
Just my Opinion. Roger

Jason:
Check the Lube Order: LO 9-2350-261-12 and follow it. No one's opinion should outweigh the original LO's recommendation, the Military spent millions making sure the proper weights were recommended for the proper conditions especially in a transmission with pressure related solenoids for shifting at specific oil pressures. "Chart B" (page 30) recommends 10 wt in transmission, with option for 15/40wt, I'd stick with straight 10wt as it's lighter almost like ATF.
Engine is" Chart A" (page 29) and recommends straight 30wt or 15/40 wt as well.
As to brand, sure...Rotella has been very highly recommended and as a Shell product undoubtedly meets the mill specs.
Close friend told me once put oil into the radiator of an M113 at ROTC boot camp 40 years back , he ended up in the 82nd instead of Armor.

the 40wt thing is an old Detroit guy myth lol. back in the day when multi grade oils came out they did a test and said it doesn't last as long in a 2 stroke as straight 40wt. In my mid-seventies service manual it says the same thing, my mid 80s manual says its fine. all the military stuff I've read says 15w40 is good to go. We have been running 15w40 in our 2-stroke construction equipment for 40 years with absolutely 0 problems due to the oil.
