Need help starting a tank engine

Post by printzpic » Sun Aug 18, 2019 8:56 am

Need some help. We're working on Jim Sherman's M4A1E8 tank. Can't get it started.....no spark to the plugs. We rebuilt carb, new fuel filter, new plugs etc. Magnetos fires but doesn't get to the plugs. Brand new mag switch. This tank is powered by a Continental R975 9 cylinder radial engine with a C-4 Carburetor. Can anyone give us some telephonic/electronic advice as to what we're doing wrong? Please contact our mechanic Gary Orban at garyorban1@gmail.com or call (248) 515 6808.

Please direct your question to Gary Orban at garyorban1@gmail.com I'm not the engine mechanic, he is. Sorry but don't mean to push you off.

I know the first time we tried firing our radial, we flooded it bad. after about a week of screwing around we got it to fire up. 4-5 pumps on the primer is all ours takes and we only have 1 good mag right now.

Haven't had anything to do with these radial engines or their magnetos but have worked on magnetos before & having the points clean of grease & oil is imperative.

Here's the reply from our mechanic: "I put a test light on the point wire (both mags) and turned the engine over. Both lights flash. I was told they drove it around 19 mo. ago. I replaced the mag switch with a new one. There must be a safety switch or something in line. there is no way both mags are dead"

Basic understanding of Magnetos: They are always hot, the ground is what keeps them from sparking.

If you run a jumper wire between the currently grounded wire (which should head to the dash switch) and the mag connection, then turn that switch off (opening the ground) and try to start, you have isolated all the potential grounded switches in the system. Just be certain to have a wired grounded switch available to turn it off if you do start it or it will either have to run out of fuel or be stalled in gear (leaving an engine capable of hot starting at any point after that!!!)

How about following the steps here:
http://www.8th-armored.org/misc/36-start.htm

Or the engine manual?
http://www.theshermantank.com/wp-conten ... nental.pdf
Earlier engine (testing after overhaul is page 188):

Neat video of engine being started after rebuild here

Ask here if he has the engine TM

Maybe a download of the Magneto manual

Your boost coil and boost switch must be working at start.
