12 volt Field Coils.

Post by D.R.H. » Sat May 18, 2019 4:08 pm

Howdy Gents, I have a Delco-Remy Generator and need to find some 12 volt field coils for it. I understand that the Scout Car had a 12 volt electrical system and that is why I am posting here.

According to the manuals the M-3 Scout Car used AutoLite.

It's been a while since I've been around a Scout Car. They were built buy White, of the Yellow Coach and Motor Div. of G.M., right?? Do you have any 12 volt Delco-Remy Regulators Ben?

Dave,
I converted my friend Steve' MB jeep's 6V Autolite genny to charge at 12V using a 12V voltage regulator and a 1.5 ohm ceramic ballast resistor like you would use on an ignition coil. Basically, I measured the ohms of the field coils (1.5 Ohms) and then doubled it using the ballast resistor so as not to burn out the new regulator from over-current at 12V. Doing a little research uncovered the fact that 12V Autolite field coils had 3 ohms resistance. I used a '64 Ford civilian car regulator, 35 amps rating, it has the same circuit as the MB. Not sure which circuit the Delco genny operates on. (A or B)

It's been working for a year. Runs at 13.4V. Might not be as efficient as actual 12V field coils, but it's working fine.

Hi Marty. The ballast resistor is to be in line with wire from the field terminal. Right? And, obviously, before the field terminal of the regulator. What would happen if the ballast resistor was not in place. Would the current fry the regulator? Dave.

Yes! The ballast resistor is wired in series with the field circuit to lower the current draw through the 12V regulator while using a 6v generator.
