Ford M20 Armored Utility Car For Sale in Calif - SOLD

Post by John Neuenburg » Mon Sep 17, 2018 2:53 pm

SOLD IT

I have decided to put my 1944 M20 up for sale. Located in Sonoma, CA. Currently registered and street driven over the years. Runs and shifts well. Synchros pretty good. No dents, very nice paint. Powerful brakes, see my old Army Motors article about the big brake job. Original floor, not the retrofitted armored type. Cable throttle conversion, see my old Army Motors article. I used to use the hydraulic system and it is all present. Sharp shouldered NDT tires with sidewall cracking, not near the tread. I don't mind driving at speed but there are inexpensive NDCC out there plus NDT. Missing a couple of the original data plates and I have some replicas.

Has .50 M2 and .30/.50 cradle, tray. Probably the gun that is included will be my one-off plastic one that I think is very good
Very nice replica M1 bazooka and rocket tubes
M4 Ground Signal Projector replica but the bracket on the car is broken off at top. Easy to make.
Interphone box for driver
SCR-528 radio set, never hooked up
Two complete 5 section antennas and MP-48 mounts and cable insulators
Six mines, inert
Two binoculars and cases
The Sherrill compass and bracket
Some spare protectoscope lenses. One in hatch actually works! (worth the asking price right there)
Siren
Map table and the other interior items
Recent full size battery
Has the brackets for a second generator but not installed. I have a spare generator
Set of the rare sheet metal pieces that sort-of seal off the bottom of the engine compartment. Not installed.
Converted right tail lamp to service stop and running lamp using existing wiring in the conduits
Strap/hooks to hold the sand skirts up when servicing rear wheels
Spare .50 barrel
Grenades in the boxes
One smoke pot, .50 and .30 boxes
Lube chart repro
Spare bullet sealing fuel tank, probably unused, excellent condition but this car has had no issues with CA gas since it came here from PA in 2003. I don't have the metal surrounds for the tank in the car.

What it doesn't have: tools, engine oil cans, service oil can, tow cable (but have the eyelets to make two - see other thread)

Comes with around $3,000 in spares including 3 NOS diff sets, auto choke, generator, throttle & clutch slave cylinders, set of 12 NOS wheel cylinders, distributor, carb, two starters, spare radios, many other things

$69,500. See deductions at the bottom of the post

I call it a M20A1 Tactical Hot tub for a reason. M20s are great parade vehiclesImage

3rd model Bendix hydrovac was a common upgrade to these cars. Very powerful, and rebuildable unlike the original one I understand. I had mine done and I honed all cylinders, NOS brakes, lightly turned drums, fresh fluid occasionally. No leaks. Stops like a six legged cat.

First trip to Tower Park. I've driven it the 150 mile round trip 5 or 6 times. Cruise 45-49 mph. Will no doubt redline at 56 on flat ground so it's not down on power

Before I painted the front of the compartment white

I might add some more photos so check back.

Will consider partial trade for WWII jeep, like an old restoration. No frame off resto project or a real nice one.
Deduct $500 if I keep the bazooka
Will consider a 28+' gooseneck flatbed trailer in trade

Howdy John,

It sounds like a sad day, but I know all the great projects that lie ahead. You will certainly miss the allure that goes with those who stare at you as you drive by and they do a double take, but I know how you feel. Some lucky chap will be ushered into the small group of current and former armored tub owners.

I wish you all the best in the sale. It's a super sweet ride and will be most certainly a trouble free, once in a life time opportunity for someone. Wish we lived closer, but I'm 10 days away from a move to TN. would have loved to do the LRRD bit with you.

Here is a short video I made of the starting procedures from the TM. Hopefully this helps with the sale. If you want, I can delete that. Just let me know. I made this when I was living in the O'quarters on WRAFB a few years ago. the ride was a great hit with my son's friends, not so much with the base commander who lived 5 Houses town and got tired of the siren.😋 Anyway I hope it helps with the sale.

John, Could I by any chance come and take a look and get some measurements for the engine compartment bottom pans. I dont believe my project has those, would be interested in reproducing a set for mine.

More tweaks to original post including small price change. Prefer selling within the U.S.

My goodness keep it John! The rest of us dream about owning a Ford M8/M20 and likely won’t ever get the chance to restore one! What an awesome street driveable piece of US armor. Regardless, good luck with the sale, hope it gets a loving home!
