Scout car still squeals.

Post by smithtw » Mon Jun 18, 2018 3:52 am

Still open for suggestions to try to find loud squeal in Scout Car. Same sound as bad power steering pump on car only much louder. Pretty much only does it going uphill with load on engine. Had engine rebuilt this year.Had trans to shop for checkup and it came back as in excellent shape. Has new clutch plate, new pressure plate, new TO bearing. Sound seems to come from clutch area but can't be cause all is new. No bolts hitting and starter not stuck.Everything on engine new or rebuilt, like the generator. Only thing not touched is water pump. Front drive shaft off so not that. Trying to find this, on and off, for 3 years. Can't drive it. Stumped!

Have you greased the fan belt pulley? 8)

Do you have the correct fan belts on, and properly tightened? I wonder if the throw out bearing spring is weak, and the throw out bearing is sticking on the shaft. Is the clutch pedal spring tight not allowing the clutch plate disk to touch the flywheel? U joints all greased and in good condition? Is the water pump leaking? Just a few things that come to mind.

Do not put to much tension on the fan belts,,,, that fan bracket likes to brake and send the fan into the radiator. (been there, done that) One Scout car person even suggested using only one belt, instead of two.

Was the purpose of the two fan belts for combat redundancy? If so, it seems only using the rear belt would significantly reduce the tension on the far (front) end of the tensioner and make it less likely to fail.

if you do remove the front belt, what are the possible implications?

The purpose of the two belts was as you thought, redundancy. But also the two belts were needed to provide traction to the 55 amp generator, when it went under full load running for radios and recharging the battery. As most of the time now we do not have that situation, the generator never gets a full time continuous load. The only thing I can see happening at worst, is the fan belt will squeak on the fan pulley, until the fan comes up to full speed with the shutters open. If fan belt is real loose, it will squeak full time, until at road speed pushes amounts of air through radiator to equal what the fan would pull alone.

Having the belt on the inner part of pulley, (closes to the bracket) should reduce the chances of bracket failure. The brackets are cast and are poorly designed,,, as they have flaw failure points. It would be nice to NC machine some new (redesigned) fan brackets, from solid metal stock, so they would bend significantly before failure.

I have had the fun, of the fan bracket failing, sending the fan and hub into the radiator.
As the water pump is mechanical, (not belt driven) the now pierced radiator pumps out fluids rapidly.
5 years ago, the cost to recore one of these radiators was $2500,,,, but if the top and bottom tanks are damaged, the fun begins to find a original radiator to recore..
