My M60A1 arrived today and now I'm looking for spares
Hi folks,
I was fortunate enough to purchase the late Steve Preston's M60A1 main battle tank and it arrive yesterday. I am very excited about getting on with it but I am always thinking about the future. Does anybody know where there me a good running take-out power pack or two available? I just want to make sure that if the current engine ever fails, we won't have any issues. I've seen some on eBay but both were gasoline engines, not the diesel model.

Nice tank! Looks like it has the mounting points for the reactive armor tiles! (Just like the ones we used in Desert Storm) Probably a USMC tank, correct? Any original unit markings on that one?
There were "Training tiles" which were simple plates fitted in place of the explosive tiles for use stateside, maybe you can find those, too!

This was definitely a USMC issue tank and I have the release papers from the Dept of Navy as well as the Marine who signed off on the demil. It still has the USMC marking as well as the name "Crazy Knuckles" that was stenciled on both sides. I'll have to start searching for the training tiles!!!!

The M60 engines are in high demand. Many countries are still using them. I checking on my oversea contact for engines. pdqf 515-442-3126

The pack we have is not only 100% complete but every line, hose and connector is marked as to where it goes. It's not like I don't have a pack for it and I'm sure it's going to start right up but I always like being prepared.

Ron: If the pack is sitting separate, and has all the lines marked with blue tape and black Sharpie, I can give you the history on it. I sold one to Steve last year, not sure if it went toward that tank or another one they still have up there.

Cool link to a lot of Desert storm M60-A1 with ERA pictures, if you haven't seen it before. It shows how the ERA plates attached to the mounts:
http://www.primeportal.net/tanks/greg_s ... php?Page=1
There are dummy plates, hollow, that we had to switch out on ship for the real ones before we hit the beach, then switch back before we came back stateside.
My tank also had a mine plow and the lane marker attachments on it, (pics in the link are not my tank or unit).

M60s NEVER had Gas engines. They were ALL diesel. Only Patton tanks before the M48A3 had gas. Diesel Engines were used starting with the M48A3.
I would recommend you join up at the AFV board on Com-central.net to see if they can help you. As mentioned, these engines are hard to find because they are still in service. Unless you want to import, you should start reaching out to the large, private collections in the US to see if they have any excess. Knights Armament comes to mind. Sending you a PM right now on other parts.
