White M3A1 Scout Car Restoration

Post by philipgslattery » Tue Feb 19, 2008 4:23 pm

Under the the thread scout car mirror a few photos of the restoration were posted but I thought it would be good to start a new thread on the restoration project.
The vehicle was bought 4 years ago and I was told that it was "totally original and went well". It came from interstate and I only had photos to go on. When it arrived it hardly went and needed a lot of work. There was a lot of superficial rust and many parts were either not original or were missing.I realize that the vehicle was in much better shape than most begin with, but the photos really don't indicate the overall conditon.

The decision was made to do a complete restoration. A complete chassis up , every nut and bolt restoration is being done.
I do not have the know howor the time to do this. I am fortunate in that Robin Mawson, a top class man and vehicle restorer has been doing this with my very small assistance. He is fastidious.
Special thanks to Bob Gillard, Gary Hebding, Rod Shaver and Paul Greenstein for his trolleys and of course the fraternity of the "G".It could not have happened without everyones input.
Completion will be in approx. 6 months and I will post more photos. Philip

Philip

Make sure there is a space between the image tags like below.
You should be able to go back and edit your photos.

This will make pics look like what you did.

This will stack them on top of each other.

This will give a space so you can put a comment between. Like below

internet, and write those funny paper letter things you drop in the blue box.

Thankyou for the kind comments and Craig I will try your suggestions with the photos. Do you have further photos of your restoration that you could post?
The restoration is being done by Robin Mawson. I haven't sen Bob Gillard's workshop but would like to. Presumably he has a similar set-up with lots of toys. Philip

I started to scan his photos, but have not finished (see gallery below).
There are no captions on them. If you have a question about any
photo just ask. Its my Dads restoration. I was in the army and not
living in the area at the time when most of it was done.

My Dads Scout car after 10 year resto.
Actually had to build it without the
internet, and write those funny paper letter things you drop in the blue box.

I remember those days. Lots of stamps and phone calls.
I spent a lot of dough on phone calls to Idaho.
Drove from FL to ID for my doors and rear armor.

It's time to post a few more photos. We had a big day recently. The restored engine was started and I know it's not politically correct but it was great to see smoke come from the exhaust for the first time in 4 years

( It's difficult for me to believe but I actually posted these photos without the help of my son - two big firsts in one week. )

The bolts have been heated. Sometimes a person is needed on either side.

The other day I saw an ad. for a cold spray pressure pack with impressive results. I don't have any experience of this, although it may be worth a go.
