Post by philipgslattery » Sat Mar 05, 2016 8:36 pm

If anyone has a NOS or top condition plastic early style steering wheel ( i.e not the later metal spoke style) that they would like to sell , please let me know.
Thanks

Hi Philip

How's it going?

Did you have any luck getting a steering wheel? The reason I ask is that I am looking for another one also. My scout car went to the sandblasters today for blasting and painting. Due to a misunderstanding between the boss and the guy that was blasting, they blasted my restored steering wheel to bits!

They have offered to replace it so I need to know if there are any sources.

Thanks.

Darryl that's a bit sad.
The replacement depends on what steering wheel you are after and will settle for.The early plastic spoked Sheller steering wheels are as rare as decay in hen's teeth.I have been looking for years.I restored my green Sheller years ago and it came up very well, but I am also after a black Sheller.
The later model scout cars had the metal spoke steering wheels as used in the half tracks.I have one of these which I am happy to part with although I haven't actually checked to see if it fits the scout car.
If I were you I would settle for the later one,but obviously it is your call.

How is it progressing? Photos are always welcome.
Keep up the good work.
Philip

Hi Philip,

It sounds like I will need to grab whatever I can get. It certainly sounds like they are getting hard to find. My one was one of the black plastic spoked ones.

How much are you looking for, for the spoked one?

I'll attach a couple of photos when I get it back from the sandblasters.

Darryl the wheel appears to be in very good condition. The plastic rim appears as if it is coated with some plastic film to give it some roughness.I am not sure if it has been used.It probably just needs a really good clean up.It could possibly need a paint. It is black and looking at the hub it looks as if it will slot straight in. The hole appears to be about one inch and it is keyed as is the plastic spoked wheel.
Some years ago I paid US $150 for it and will sell it for the same price.
If interested I can send photos via email.
Philip

in the process of locating parts for my lot 2 car , a better steering wheel was on the list. the Ross gearbox is used on several brands of equipment. I found a dead ringer match for my car on a Hyster Karry Krane circa 1965 on the back of a dealers "salvage parts lot". I was lucky that they had a NOS rubber horn button in stock. (weather proof outdoor use) another direction to look is at Seagrave Fire Engines. They also ran Ross steering gear, possibly thru mid-60s. Since most had closed cabs and short windshields, the possibility of finding a winner there may be better than with Hyster equipment.

I have been searching in vain for many years on eBay and at various meetings etc. for an original black Sheller steering wheel for the scout car.

My repaired original green one still looks very good. It has developed a couple of fine cracks but that is all.I believe that it is possible to restore some steering wheels which initially might look too far gone.

I had a later style metal spoked wheel which I sold.
