WTB Late April 1944 MB engine

Post by claptonisgod » Wed Aug 03, 2022 7:03 pm

Looking for a rebuildable engine for my early May 1944 (329XXX) MB, I think I want somewhere in the late April 1944 range. Preferably in the northeast, doesn’t need to be 100% complete or running but looking for one with the major things there and no cracks or other big issues. I tried to have a block I bought off here years ago rebuilt, and ran into the issue of it missing the main bearing caps so hoping to avoid a repeat. Thanks.

I'm thinking that you actually want an engine around 410000 +/- a little.

In my data base I have:
Engine # 401378 cast 4/25
Engine # 402013 machined 4/23
Engine # 408096 cast 4/28

You don't define "early May" but figure the engine was built about 5 - 7 days before installation and the block was cast about a week earlier.

Look for a casting date that is late April like the ones Seth shared or the first week of May.

The serial number will be in the correct range if the casting is in this range.

Good Luck,
Peter

Thanks for the info both. I didn’t specify the date because the body and data plates were long gone, but I’ve estimated it to May 6 1944. I’ll amend my preference to a late April 1944 block between 400k-410k accordingly.

I'd still focus more on an April casting date instead of a serial number.

That's a wider aperture with a better chance to find a block.

Plan B is to get a war time block and put a rebuild tag on the dash. That lets you use an MB or GPW with any serial number or date.

My 2 cents,
Peter

Ok, late April 1944 casting date it is. Is there a way to extrapolate the year after the month/day, or just link with serial number range?

I realize that this is not exactly what you are looking for but I am located in Southern NH and have two blocks for sale, casting dates are as follows; 2-27 for 564XXX and 2-12 for 556XXX if you are interested.

Thanks for the reply, I’ll definitely keep it in mind as an option. My 1947 CJ has a 1938 Americar L134 in it, so I really want to get this one as right as possible, but will let you know if I can’t find one closer. Are both good rebuild candidates?

Yes they are, one has the pan and head still in place, the other has a head but no pan, crank is still in place, both have been stored in a barn for quite some time.

you are in MA, and NH is too far? Do they not border each other, Am I reading that correct? I guess NE PA is way too far, anyway closest engine I have right now is 6-15, runs, but you would kill a genset.

Duhh guess I was brain dead. lol your other question gotta link cast date with ser number, same on the head, but whats embossed on it tells year.

I f you do the craigslist thing, guy in se CT has a genset 4 sale, maybe you can get him to give you a ser num and date code on it, If its not right you can always retrieve it and i may buy it from you. It runs, no need to rebuild a motor. I was just out in that area and did not get a reply in time from him.
