Wanted: left and right rear axle brake drum and hub assembly

Post by Doug L. » Mon Nov 23, 2015 7:54 am

I am in need of a good set of left and right brake drum/hub assemblies (like the ones pictured) for my rear axle at a fair price. Need them for my '42 GPW. If you have something just post/pm pics.Image One of mine are bent and the other has drilled out and tapped hub glade holes and excessive scoring on the brake surface.

I am located in southwest Mississippi, USA.

Thanks!

I have one, early 42 drum. Not sure if it is left or right. I will check and email pic. Its a good hub, and I have early left and right MA/MB Axles as well. They might be ford, but I think they are MA or MB as well.

Doug, I have two brake drums available. The right hand thread is definitely a Ford with an F mark, the left hand is not marked F anywhere that I can see, so it's origin is unknown. Both are decent shape with good braking surface. The right hand came off of my GPW during restoration. It was on the left side and not Ford marked; but a decent drum. Email me off of the G-503 board, at Industele@aol.com and I'll be glad to send you some photos. I'm in Birmingham, Alabama - not quite in west Mississippi but perhaps close enough.

You can knock out the studs, press off the old drum and use some of Ron's replacement drums. They are the later, removable type, but they'll be 100% good to go.

Other than the wheel studs, there's no difference between "right" and "left" and left hand studs are availible from Ron.

I have a hub out in the garage. I can check what size it is if you want.

Are you sure that the demountable drum made to fit outside the hub can be installed on the inside of the hub?

It cannot be. You disassemble the hub assembly, reinstall the wheel studs and slide on the new drum from the outside. There is no discernible difference unless the wheel is removed.

Correct, as long as the late type drums are installed on the outside.

Hello all.

I have not heard of these latter drums before that mount to the outside of the hub.

I am guessing they are slightly deeper to allow for the thickness of the hub so that the brake
shoes still have full coverage?

Does anyone have photos please or a part number?

Regards
Doug.

Is this what you are looking for?
I thought it as early, but it maybe late. I only have one. held on with brass screws.

Hello Sarg.

Thanks for the photo.

Yes I think so. Further research has revealed that the drum should be 9" x 1 3/4" deep. The originals are narrower as they only
need to internally be the width of the brake shoes. I would need to measure mine to give you the correct measurement.

The small holes should be countersunk and have matching screws that hold the drum onto the hub. Apparently that is a mod that has to be
performed on a wartime jeep to correctly take these.

The big advantage being that you can access all the brake components without having to remove the hub.

Of course, not period correct, but all depends on how much of a purist someone is.

They are Omix-Ada part number 808770 and came with jeeps circa 1948 or 1953 through into the early 1970s.
Other manufacturers other numbers but the Omix number seems to be the common one.

The brass screws is interesting, never heard of that before. Wonder if someone did that because they lost the steel ones?

Regards
Doug

Took more pictures of the hub and drum assembly.

Hey Doug,
I made a mistake, all three of the counter sunk are steel screws.
As you can see from the last picture the shoe surface is the same. Only difference is the offset of the drum face to mount on the outside.
I wish I have four of these on my jeep.
I only have one. Right hand threads on it. I can sell it for 40 plus shipping.

Hey Sarg

Many thanks for all the photos. Very much so for the profile one showing the height difference!!!

If you want more of those, price is good, quite a few places sell them in USA, wish that was
the case in Australia. :-(
