Transmission hard shifting

I thought I'd mention this again; sometimes, a hard shifting problem can be corrected by replacing the shift rail poppet balls with longer slugs. The holes where the balls rest in the aluminum case can become elongated and then will not engage correctly with the notches in the shifter rails. Charles Witt developed a procedure to replace the balls with longer slugs to correct this problem viewtopic.php?f=148&t=265010 and later John Emery made a custom parts kit available for this modification. This is an easy and cheap repair that might fix your hard shifting problem and is worth doing even if you are not (yet!) having hard shifting issues!
