New Mule with SN's

Post by Guam0311 » Wed Jun 05, 2019 11:03 pm

I just recently picked up another MULE which will add hours of fun and work as well as emptying the bank account.

I know Chuck, Charles and others on here may want the numbers from the data plates to add to their data base. I was surprised that the plates were still there. Maybe the previous owner submitted the SN's but here they are anyway. The Mule is an A-2 but it has straight drop gear axle covers in the rear so I guess someone converted a 4 wheel to a 2 wheel? I presume the bed and drop gear housings are magnesium? The Mule has no motor or fuel tank.

Thanks for sharing your numbers. Contract number should be DA-20-113-AMC-03624(T)

I will look and see what I have left, I may have the front cross member intake pipe and the steering column brace, if you are interested.

Look on the side of the transmission drivers side for the 4ea studs that retain the rear bell crank assy if it is smooth and no studs then my guess is someone installed an A5 trans axle into you A2 to complete or fix a non functioning A2 trans.

It can be drilled and tapped for 4WS this is my way of locating and drilling and tapping.

Caution: the top left hole can only be drilled about 3/4" deep otherwise you may drill into the reverse idler gear and snap off your drill bit that will now be in the transmission.

1 Stud installed and the other 3 holes drilled ready to tap

Using a tap guide I insert a bolt that is turned down to 5/16" to align the guide for tapping the other 2 holes then inset a bolt into one of the tapped hole and tap the 3rd hole. Then I remove the tap guide and use a bottom tap to finish.

Is this the Mule "trailer" that was in the Julian area?

There are several Mule owners in the SD area if you are local and need free advice.

Mine was built in 66 too. It was an A2 converted to an A5. I think Charles told me a lot of A2s were converted to A5s (Safety issue) I still have the studs on the rear axle for the AWS bell crank. I'd like to convert it back to AWS. Those tires look like they are aircraft related. Tow bar is a nice bonus.

Charles, After looking at the Transmission left side, all 4 studs are there equipped and ready for the rear bell crank. That's a great tutorial and pictures of bell crank install. Thanks. Not sure if im going to make it four wheel. This one will be doing all the grunt work, worker MULE. definitely need new tires though.

M37-man, yes this is the Mule from Julian Ca. Me and my son drove down from Northern Ca, Yuba City area and picked it up last week. Thanks for the help though. I used to live down there by Lemon Grove. It looks like the Mule was working on an Apple orchard perhaps? I know Julian is known for that.

I think they collect SN's over the years and use that info to breakdown the history of each MULE? for example who manufactured it. This MULE was made by Bowen McLaughlin York. Which I believe made all the A-2 models. Check with Chuck and Charles they will know.

Yours is 66 also, what month? This mule also has the rear bell crank studs but rear straight cv axles. strange huh? The mule was used for working and was pulled by another mule, so I guess no need for the military tires, just the smooth. Now maybe just a street drag racer! yea those tow bars are pricey on ebay and other sites.

Thanks TGA, yes I will be looking for an engine soon, not sure if to go Genset, but then I have to piece all the different parts together, engine shields, flywheel, etc, etc, just about everything, or a straight up MULE motor would be excellent. or rebuild a motor and piece together. aww the choices huh.
