Great restoration John, what size stencils did you use on the gas tank and the deck?

Cannot resist to publish that nice photo showing an unusual use of a USMC mule in Da-Nang, Vietnam.

It appears to be a Late M274:
1-A Later series M274 because of the Lifting Loops instead of Hub Caps
2-The Rear Engine Guard does not have the bracket for the Hand Crank
3-No Cargo Bar protecting the Shifting and Emr Brake shafts-handle
4-Appears no Valve Stem Sleeve FSN 2640-219-8388 Ord 520894 Per fig 38, TM 9-2320-213-34P, Oct 1963

Re: Pictures of mules from 101st AB?
So I finally got my fuel tank fixed and put back on. It was all rusted out on the bottom, so we welded a new piece on. I didn't know at the time that the 101st Airborne and Torii Gate were painted on the tank. I only discovered them after we welded the new piece on the bottom. So I'm trying to figure out whether or not I should paint over them and paint new letters and Torii gate, or leave it as is and try to figure out what the other letters are and if there was more lettering at the bottom of the fuel tank.
Any suggestions? I know some have stated that I should keep it as is and just paint the bare metal (which I've started to do).
Should I touch up the lettering and the Torii Gate?
The rest of the yellow paint will be coming off the deck and other areas and replaced with olive drab.

1-Leaving it original is best.
2-Touching Up retains most originality since you started to paint over some of the lettering.
3-Painting and Re-Lettering makes it easier to view and pictures will document original condition.

Re: Pictures of mules from 101st AB?
So do you think it looks good like it is? I kind of like it, even though it's not perfect. On the fuel tank, the bottom half, where I have painted, was actually where the heat from welding the new bottom plate on burnt the paint and it basically fell off. The paint was yellow at the time when we welded the new bottom plate on. It wasn't until afterward that I started to take the yellow paint off that we descovered the Torii Gate symbol and the 101st AB lettering.
I'd really like to see if anyone has pictures of a mule out there that has a Torii Gate on it, so I can see if there were any other symbols or lettering on the bottom half of the fuel tank.
The front of the mule has the lettering "HQ" on it. I was wondering if the bottom of the tank might have this too.
Thanks for the reply.

Re: Pictures of mules from 101st AB?
I think it makes sense to preserve historical markings on historic vehicles. My brother and I acquired an M274A2 last year, and we decided to do a complete tear down and reassembly restoration, with paint removal, priming and repainting. The SN clearly showed this mule to be a Marine, but when we started carefully removing paint on the front frame member we discovered marking indicating Army assignment:
1C A V 2C 12
HQ 116
We are preserving this portion of the front frame just as found, while painting the rest of the mule in 24052 Marine Forest Green Semi-Gloss. We feel this is appropriate to honor the memory of those who served in both branches, especially those who operated this mule in wartime.

Your number on the front cross member clearly shows at least the bumper or the chassis once was assigned to Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 12th Cavalry of the 1st (Air) Cav Division. 2/12 was Airmobile Infantry during the Vietnam war. They arrived in country 15 September 1965 and departed 27 March 1971, previously stationed at Fort Benning, Ga. Its not unusual for Army vehicles or equipment to end up with service with the MC.
In a recent conversation with Muleman and others, we agree after so many years of the late Leonard Grove, Bill Watson, & others that sold these truck's in mass, there surly are some bastard mules out there. Beds with MC serial number switched to Army frames, etc. etc. I recently purchase an A2 from a guy that purchased it from Property Disposal (DRMO for young guys) at Albany, GA, that is a MC depot, and it is clearly marked MC, while my blood is Army,, I'm going to restore this one and leave it MC. One thing nice about this hobby, its your mule paint it up as you like!!
Cheers!
