Auto Shop teacher wrote:WOW Lance, looking 'great' (better than good). What gauge tubing are you using on the foot baskets. I assume the seat back was made with the same tubing. Do you have any detail images if how you connected the the steel tube to the screw clamp on the bottom tube?

This part?
I just welded a 3/8-16 SHCS to a piece of CRES rod I bent and then made a little washer for it. Pretty simple.
I did not follow the pattern of using ACME threads like the factory. ACME taps are expensive.

Lance sent you an e-mail about the Tool and Instrument Stowage Box used with the 106 Recoilless Rifle.

I'm back on this. I got a little sidetracked making footbaskets viewtopic.php?f=79&t=276294 and another side project http://monitortop.freeforums.net/thread ... -ck-15-a16 but now I'm 100% back on the Mule.

So my goal is to pull the bed off but since it seems like California is finally getting some rain and my inside space is limited I decided to tackle it one part at a time as it comes off till I get to the whole bed coming off and hopefully by then the weather will improve.

So I started by removing the engine guard cage. Bubba has been here as seen by the bolt that was added to the leaf spring? they welded on that didn't quite fit right so just add a bolt to make up the difference :o

Spectacular welds

The I started looking at the handrails. They're not terrible but the back one is pretty bent up. I started thinking about how long it was going to take me to straighten them up to the point where I would be happy and just decided to replace the tube altogether.

The original tube

I already did the left side rail but it was getting dark and the latest storm was rolling in so I didn't get pictures yet.

On a side note: One of my neighbors was a motorpool sergeant in Vietnam (Quang Tri 1968) and has some pictures of the Mules he was responsible for maintaining. Wouldn't it be awesome to see that many in one place at one time! Just think you could walk down the line and say "I'll take those two and that third one down there :) "

Dr Lance
What did you use for the rear frame rail?
Those photos are cool, nice assortment of mules! ...wouldn't like to be in VN in 70 though. Bless those folks who answered the call...
Remember the word "expert".....An "EX" is a has been.... and a "SPERT" is a little drip...

Lance, I like the 3rdMARDIV sticker on your fuel tank. Can you tell me where you got it?

Thanks,
Dave

1" .090" wall steel tube. The original tube looked like it was .060 but I had a pile of .090 so it'll just be stronger. The only hard part is carefully slicing the brackets off.

I made it. My neighbor has a bunch of 3rdMARDIV stuff in his garage so I originally made it for him and figured since he was an official Mule mechanic I'd put it on mine to honor him. It's made from some type of waterproof xerox copier paper that we used to use in the NASA neutral buoyancy tanks and then just has spray adhesive on the back. I'll make you one if you'd like?

Well the engine guard is done less sandblast and paint which I'll wait till I have a bunch of stuff.

This is the start to a Tool and Instrument Stowage Box for a 106RR equipped Mule. I wanted to make a battery box to replace the thing that's on there now and Muleman7 convinced me I should mimic a 106RR toolbox. The metal store isn't open on Sundays so this is as far as I got today.

Hi Lance, looking good so far, are you using stainless? I was over at Industrial Metal on Monday and was thinking of your project.

I was at IMS on Monday at about 1:30pm. No it's not stainless. It's expensive (in my experience 3x the cost of carbon steel) and I'm painting it anyways. I did think about it though.
