New Mule Tech Board

Post by Chuck W. » Tue Oct 27, 2015 12:21 pm

The moderator has created a new mule tech board for us. This will be for the how-to's and tech info. Please continue to post normal mule questions and discussions here. This should make it easier to find the tech info without cluttering up the discussion board. Will this work for everybody? Thanks!

I noticed all your technical posts such as, 4 wheel steer conversion, etc. have been removed from this board. I assume they've been moved to the new tech board, however,
it won't let me in... "You do not have the required permissions to read topics within this forum."

For those like me that can't seem to ever find the Tech board, here is a direct link to it: viewforum.php?f=148

It’s been awhile and now I need some guidance. I installed a ge
Alternator and when I started my A5 up the engine went into maximum speed at least that’s what it sounded like). I shut it down but attempted 3 more startups. It ran for a total of about 6 minutes. The last startup produced smoke. The result was: black burned oil, a cooked battery and right plug. I found a ground off and the alternator fins bent. I haven’t hadthe heart to check the engine. Help!

I think we are going to need more detail...type of alternator, how was it wired, maybe some photos...
I can't think of any way an alternator could control the engine RPM.

Chuck, could it not have been wired as a starter generator somehow? A current applied from the stored energy of the battery causing the alternator to “motor”, thusly over revving the engine?

I guess it would depend on the type of alternator. There is a lot more to this story that we don't know.

First, thanks for replying. The alternator was furnished by Military Mules. It came with a large belt that barely fit because it was so fat. I got carried away and wired a hour meter & on/off kill switch (I have never done anything like this before and am admittedly a novice electrician). When conducting my “crime scene” eval, I noticed the ground at the kill switch not connected. I don’t know, the connection to the battery and the hour meter/kill switch were the only things out of the ordinary. Oh, and the Chinese alternator/oversized belt.

I am not familiar with a supplier "Military Mules". I would be glad to help you with questions and problems with stock mules, but not knowing exactly what or how aftermarket accessories were added, I can't help you. All I can do is offer the schematic I use when adding a Delco 10SI one-wire alternator to a mule.

I no longer use the Max Power 4012 switch, I now use the more robust Cole Hersee 95539-BX switch: https://www.amazon.com/Cole-Hersee-9553 ... C98&sr=8-1

Well guys, I’m gonna start digging into my mule to reconfigure it it my pre-alternator rigging. I hope the overspeed didn’t mess with my rings or pistons or whatever. Wish me luck
