M274a5 Brunswick or Baifield

Post by Cbrinker » Tue Jul 10, 2018 11:23 am

I have a m274a5 which all the data plates were removed from and I was wondering if there is anyway to check if it is a Brunswick or Baifield. Thanks

Do you happen to know the registration number that was painted on the side of the deck? Baifield mule numbers are in the 32XXXX/33XXXX range, and the Brunswick Corp. mules are in the 36XXXX/37XXXX range. Also, the Brunswick Corp mules seem to have some part numbers hand-etched into the individual parts and also seem to have a lot of cad-plated hardware.

The Mules manufactured by Baifield Industries Emtex Division may or should have part of the Serial Number stamped into the underside of the top Foot Basket Bracket.

That's very interesting! Do you know if it's just the Emtex machines or all of the Baifield-built machines? How about the Automatic Sprinkler Corp. Baifield Division-built A5 mules?
Thanks!

Sorry for the late response to everyone, thanks for the advice. It does have the registration numbers still on it. I will check them and get some pictures when I head out to the shop today

I went out and looked. There are no numbers on the basket and the registration numbers are completely different, I guess from a repaint. It is USA 02A01969. I cannot post pictures for some reason. My grandfather who got it from the government said it was a Brunswick, but he took the plates off of it when he got it. He is trying to find the plates for me though. I was just trying to find something to verify that it is a Brunswick without the plates

According to your Reg # 02A-01696 I would say it was manufactured by Automatic Sprinkler Corp Baifield Ind

Two of my Mules were Manufactured by Automatic Sprinkler Corp Baifield Ind

Ser # 12003

My Baifield has the number 1190 stamped into the foot basket support bracket yet my serial is 11195 and my registration is 325489. This matches up on the plates
My data plates are original as well as the registration numbers painted by USMC.
An error on the assembly line?
Perhaps my plates were swapped and 11190 is stamped 1195 on the support bracket?
Chuck does 11190 appear on your list as I would be curious to know if that machine matches up to its stamp.
The mysteries continue.

If there are no numbers at all on the foot basket bracket, does that mean it was manufactured by Brunswick? Did one company produce a lot more than the other? Did Baifield produce all the A5s? So many questions. :o

The 02A prefix is for a U.S. Army registration number, not USMC, and the Army numbers are not in sequence like the USMC numbers, but I do agree with Charles that your machine is probably a mid-to-late Baifield-built unit, serial number in the 114XX range, probably built in Sept./Oct. 1968, but I think it is EMTEX, not Automatic Sprinkler Corp. because of the low, 4-digit number. I would look very carefully at your number and make sure that is a zero after the 02A prefix and not another number. Almost all of the Automatic Sprinkler Corp. mules that I have in my database with the 02A prefix have 5 following numbers with no zeros. It is possible that what you are seeing as a zero could be a 3? That WOULD make it an Automatic Sprinkler Corp. mule. I think John Emery has the correct reproduction Baifield/EMTEX data plate for your mule.

Just for reference, Baifield Corporation, including the EMTEX and Automatic Sprinkler divisions, produced 2,400 M274A5 mules between 1965 and 1969. Brunswick corp. produced the last contract batch of M274A5 mules, totaling 874 units, between 1968 and 1970.
Chuck does 11190 appear on your list as I would be curious to know if that machine matches up to its stamp.
No, incomplete data. I have 11146 and then a gap until 11195.
