WW2 USMC camoflauge: application and colors?

Post by Kevin Lockwood » Fri Sep 04, 2009 11:59 am

I have been gathering photos showing LVT-3s of the 1st and 4th Am Trac Battalions on Okinawa. So far I have been unable to locate any color photos. The USMC color photos I have seen are of jeeps and have four colors (Green, Black, White/Cream, and a Lt Brown/Tan) The photos I have of the LVTs show only a three color pattern which I believe to be lacking the Brown from the four color pattern. Any thoughts?
As to the application; Would the camo be applied with sharp mask lines and a paint gun or more simply with a brush?????

I don't agree on the jeeps.

Three color is what I see most of the time.

Base of forest green with the black/white-cream.

Thanks Mark. Some where I have seen a tan/brown as well but your photo is very similar to the three color patterns I have in my b/w LVT photos. Do you know the color photos date or location?

The first photo was from this thread.

http://www.g503.com/forums/viewtopic.ph ... hilit=camo" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It was marked for the D-day invasion. I think it was mismarked and is in the Pacific as D-day weather sucked and those guys in the photo don't look like they are in the English channel with a Navy radio jeep.

The second photo is from the invasion of Iwo Jima.

Mark,

That's an embarkation (loading up) photo and the long sleeve shirts would have been correct for May in England.

Well...

Here is a photo of me with the LVT I drove in "Flags of Our Fathers" in Iceland and one of the row of LVT's we used.

The Tech advisers were very specific as to the colors and patterns of this camo and did quite a bit of research befor ethey were painted. They were matched to B&W and color films of Iwo.
