Pontoon bridge erection boat

Post by poppyjo » Thu Jul 04, 2019 5:09 pm

Just acquired a 1952 Higgins pontoon bridge erection boat. I don't know much about these but it looks to be complete and unmolested. Both halves are currently sitting on the original shipping cradles. Have pictures but am computer challenged. Would appreciate if someone could post on my behalf. Military museum in Indiana has expressed interest but they want me to donate it. Located in western Kentucky. Asking $5000. Thanks,Jody

Jody,

Sorry I didn't get back to you on this. The timing couldn't have been worse for me with my dad in hospice and his passing a few weeks ago. I've come to realize that I am project rich and time poor at the present. That is a great historical piece that needs preserved but I'm not that guy with current priorities. Here are the pics:

I'm pretty sure that the engines are Continental Red Seal 363s. As you mentioned that this was used in a film (movie rental), my guess is that the Deutz tags were placed as part of certification of some environmental regs wherever the filming took place.

I wonder if anyone has noticed the German cross on the side cowles of the cockpit? Does anybody have a clue to where they came from? A friend of mine seemed to think the boat might have been in a movie. Think about it. :D jody

Your boat is beautiful. I'd truly hate to this this Historic piece go to a Museum and just sit. It needs someone to restore it and run it during military waterfest activities. I would make an offer but, I'm not in the habit of insulting people. The more I would have to pay for the boat the less funds available for a restoration. At 63, I start college (again after 40 years) this summer for the classes required to be an EMT. Just so you understand why funds are low.

With your permission, I'd like to save the photos of your boat. Thank you.
