Rear main oil seal in weasel engine

Post by dukws4ever » Thu Sep 05, 2019 5:20 pm

Being new to weasels I am trying to find information regarding the rear main oil seal for the Studebaker Champion engine as used in the weasel
According to the manual TM9-1772A that states --
"Carefully install new specially treated wood oil seals at the rear main bearing cap"
I also researched this in a 1950s copy of Motor manual and that also mentions them
"Specially treated wood plugs are used at the rear main bearing cap to prevent oil leaks.
Whenever the rear main bearing cap is removed new seals should be installed"
I opened the new gasket kit and there are included two pieces of wood
These are approx 2" x 1/4" x 1/8"
So the gasket people thought to include them.
When I disassembled the engine I carefully noted where all the gaskets etc came from and there weren't any wood items or any type of rear main oil seal present
The way the crankshaft is manufactured it appears that there shouldn't be a need for an oil seal in that area
I'm hoping somebody has insight into this issue
Thanks in advance for any and all help

My weasel engine does not have an actual oil seal fitted, rather the crankshaft journal in way of the oil seal has a reverse helix machined into it. Later model champ engines had an oil seal fitted.I have attachd a photo that better explains what I am trying to describe

Hi OzM29c
That is the same as the one I have
I have seen the shaft spiral before but never on a crankshaft
It's normal for gearboxes and axles etc.
I was a bit puzzled with the wood but I have recieved information back from Russ at studebakerparts.com explaining where the wood is used.
Thanks to weaseler for that contact
Will post pics when the rear main cap is installed
Thanks for your reply to my posting

That reverse rotation spiral thread on the crankshaft to the run oil back into the crankcase is a holdover from many engines through the 20's & 30's when good sealing was in its infancy.

Interested in the wood solution on your engine.

I ran into shaped/fitted 'hard wood' main & con rod bearings, drip oil fed, fitted to old single banger water pumps, in my younger days, as a country mechanic in the Gascoyne in W.A.

We lived & worked in USA 1985 ~ 2010 with the odd year or 2 overseas.
Social Security payments are welcome now, especially with the low $A.

Moved back to Australia for better health care coverage after the missus had cancer & they took that condition off her health insurance. Full health care is now $225 p.m. Any doctor any hospital.

Its all burned up in the hinterland [where you were residing] over the last few days, terrible!
Been smelling smoky air for the last week.
Very dry, low humidity & high gusting westerly winds running up the slopes & gullies.

Heritage listed Bina Burra Lodge burned down yesterday & lots of homes in the Granite belt, Lamington National Park & Northern N.S.W. gone. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-09-08/ ... d/11489860

Gday John
I am sorry to see that the Binna Burra lodge is gone
Went there a couple of times
All that area was nice
We nearly lost our house last year early October
Nearly 6000 homes burnt down
Stopped 3 blocks from my place
Spent the whole week on the roof of my house
Bloody terrible
Will sent pics when i have installed the wood fillers in the engine
They are tiny and are used as spacers to keep the ends of the sump gasket from sagging when the sump is installed
Thanks

Hi OZM29C
I'm sorry to say this weasel isn't mine
I am trying to get a T24 from the owner of this one tho
Will keep you posted as to whether the guy can stand my constant enquiries to make sure he is looking after my weasel for me 😁
The one I am working on is an M29C in good overall condition
The previous owner had filled the oil pan with gasoline and nobody except for me thought to check the really low oil pressure and smell the dipstick
Ugly
It had loosened all the gum and garbage in the oil pan and had fed it through the engine
Fully blocking the oil pump pickup screen and starving the engine for oil
Wiped out the crank and blocked every oil gallery
Full teardown
Reground the crank
Fully scrubbed out the block
Nearly have the engine all back together
Just waiting on a timing gear
Will post pics on the worst bits
Thanks again for everyone's help

Don't forget to fit an Aluminium Timing gear, If the fuel came from the fuel pump, you can get a good quality fuel pump repair kit (if fitted) from these guys; http://www.then-now-auto.com/product/fp ... -pump-kit/
