Off Road weekend - New Years Weekend - Maryborough.

Post by kw573 » Fri Oct 02, 2020 9:08 pm

Hi members,

I am planning a weekend of forestry roads and tracks west of Maryborough, S.E.Qld on 1st/2nd/3rd of January, 2021.
Plans yet to be confirmed, though a Friday morning start from Wongi Waterholes camp site (camp there on Thursday night?) followed by 3 days of a wide variety of roads, tracks and medium to heavy 4WD-ing (with some local history thrown in) is the plan.

Camping will probably be without any facilities Friday night and Saturday night, finishing the weekend at Childers.
Due to the remote and confusing nature of the roads and tracks, definite convoy rules will apply, be prepared for this.

Please contact me for further details.

Look out for updates in C/R or Facebook.

Hi members,

'Wongi and Westward' has morphed into a weekend of day trips from a base camp.
The base camp will now be at the North Aramara Hall, north of Aramara (D'uh!), it is about 45kms west of Maryborough off the Biggenden road. Facilities are, at this stage, toilets, large gently sloping grassed camping area, tank (washing) water and an undercover lit meeting area. Fires may or may not be permitted depending on prevailing conditions.

Arrive from Thursday pm and stay as late as Monday morning, approx 10am. Camping is free for members, families and guests. We'll be away all day on Friday and Saturday (bring smokos and lunch, a chair if you wish), but Sunday will be a morning trip for those who need to leave at lunchtime, then an afternoon trip for those who have not yet had enough. Members are free to join/leave the weekend from the base camp. Please note that it would be risky to leave the convoy mid-trip due to the confusing nature of the roads and tracks in the areas we are venturing into. You could get lost for hours!

Vehicles must be registered and drivers licensed. The driving will vary from 40kph gravel roads to low-low scratching and scraping up long steep climbs. The worst climb can be by-passed. Covid plans will depend on the restrictions in place at the time. "Drop-off" convoy rules will apply, please be ready for this. A UHF radio would be very helpful. To help with organization, could you please give me a call if you are planning to attend some or all of the weekend. I was unable to get this update in the Nov. C/R. Trip number is 1983.

More updates will be posted here as needed.

Thanks.

Greetings,

The wet weather could make 'Wongi and westward' even more interesting, or clip its' wings or create a postponement.
We'll see.
The only update is that those wishing to camp on Sunday night will need to pay $7.50 per campsite.
Please let me know of your intentions to attend. Best is to phone me on o411 five 7 six to ate 3.

Hi Jeff,
That would be delightful if you can make it.
I'm going for a quick recee this avo to see how the creeks are running, I've had 3" of rain in the last week and am not far north of the forestry area.

Hi all,

I went for a 'Command Reconnaissance' yesterday to check out the tracks after rain and confirm a couple of details.
It took me 4 hours, and my trip meter showed 60miles (100kms). A fun, if tiring afternoon. I was chased back to town by dark clouds approaching.

Although the tyres got wet lots of times, this was the only crossing I checked out before proceeding. It was knee deep with a gravel base. Easy for the jeep.

There were lots of trees down, this was the biggest and most difficult one to get around. Gotta remember to bring a saw!
This one is a job for the Glorifier!

And this is a random picture of one of the many bridges in the area. Lots of nice smoko/lunch stops available.

Yes, you'll get your MV dirty. It is a users' weekend. (Weather permitting)

Hi members and friends,

The wet weather is, at this stage, not going to cause changes to the weekend plans.
Despite heavies falls of rain in places, our weekend playground has had very little rain according to locals.
So, yes, I'll be at Aramara North from early PM on Thursday (without phone coverage, I'm Optus network linked).
Please let me know if you are planning to attend, if you haven't so far.
Have a nice evening.

Hi all,

Wongi and Westward Weekend was interesting and varied.

7 Jeeps and a Champ spent a couple of days in the Kullogum forestry area with tracks and trails from easy cruising to very steep climbs and descents.
Picture is smoko on Friday morning.

By comments made, it was a good weekend with a pleasant campsite. The rain held off mostly and the roads had a bit of dust by Saturday.
Look out for a report or two in C/R.

Now for some more sleep!

Happy New Year!

It was a great weekend!
Thank you Sam for organising it.
There is definitely more forestry to be explored.
I really love the history.
It only took me 5 hrs to get home. I took the highway from Gympie to Caloundra turn off but it was really heavy all the way to Morayfield then I took the back roads.
See you soon.
Cheers
