I recently snagged an early A-659 manifold for my Feb 42 slat. It is in excellent condition as it was on a generator, and did not get so pitted. However, I have noted on several of these early A-659s that have the "A-659" mark on the face of of the heat control box, that it seems the casting was quite thin at the top of the top center bolt. (not the case for later A-659s, they have like 1/4" material on top) If you look at the following for example from another posting, the top is very thin, and I have seen a couple of others that appeared thin on top of the bolt hole as well:
On the one I have, it is really really thin, but serviceable I think.... Here are a couple of pictures. Are there other people with these early A-659s (that have the "A-659" on the face of the heat control box), that have seen the same issue? Seems to me the guy at the foundry doing touchup finishing got carried away with his grinder on this one, but the factory considered it acceptable. I don't see why anyone would grind this area down after the fact.
